<strong>the</strong>ir first and only child was born, on Nov. 27th. 1835.<br />
Very properly he was named William Pettit <strong>Rice</strong>, for<br />
on <strong>the</strong> <strong>Rice</strong> side <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> house <strong>the</strong>re was <strong>the</strong> long line <strong>of</strong><br />
Williams, and on <strong>the</strong> Pettit side it was <strong>the</strong> name <strong>of</strong> his<br />
grand fa<strong>the</strong>r and <strong>of</strong> his great-grand fa<strong>the</strong>rs for 4<br />
generations batk.<br />
There were many unheavals and removals from this<br />
date onward. A number <strong>of</strong> years were spent in Minnesota,<br />
Wm. Pettit <strong>Rice</strong> taking with him his young bride<br />
Rachel (Hole) <strong>Rice</strong>, and in Minnesota <strong>the</strong>ir 2 oldest<br />
children were born. Harrassed by <strong>the</strong> Indians and<br />
driven from <strong>the</strong>ir homes <strong>the</strong> Parents, Children and<br />
Grandparents returned to Ohio, where Chas. Hawley<br />
and Charity Dean <strong>Rice</strong> spent a happy life and grew<br />
gracefully older until she died, in Alliance, Ohio, Nov.<br />
19, 1887, aged 73.<br />
After 53 years <strong>of</strong> connubial bliss, Chas. H. <strong>Rice</strong> knew<br />
to a certainty that it was a good thing and with <strong>the</strong><br />
courage <strong>of</strong> his convictions, at <strong>the</strong> age <strong>of</strong> 78, he married<br />
Deborah Bentley Trescott, a Quaker lady <strong>of</strong> high culture<br />
and genuine worth, who was to him a loving and<br />
faithful wife for ten years.<br />
She was held in high esteem and loved by every member<br />
<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> family and <strong>the</strong> marriage in old age was an unqualified<br />
success. Chas. Hawley <strong>Rice</strong> died in Alliance,<br />
Ohio, Oct. 8, 1898, at <strong>the</strong> age <strong>of</strong> 87 years and his<br />
widow died May 9,<br />
1905, aged 80 yrs.<br />
Of <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r 4 children <strong>of</strong> Wm. and Elizabeth <strong>Rice</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />
record will be brief, tho in some instances it covers a<br />
remarkably long life. Elizabeth, <strong>the</strong> youngest child,<br />
made her home with her oldest bro<strong>the</strong>r, Charles, and<br />
died at <strong>the</strong> early age <strong>of</strong> 29 yrs. She was an invalid for<br />
many years and was tenderly cared for by <strong>the</strong> bro<strong>the</strong>rs<br />
and <strong>the</strong>ir wives. She died July 27, 1850, and was<br />
