In this ra<strong>the</strong>r remarkable family <strong>of</strong> eight daughters<br />

and one son <strong>the</strong> lines will not be traced here.<br />

Sarah <strong>Rice</strong>, <strong>the</strong> eldest daughter, married John Looker,<br />

and had 4 children, <strong>the</strong> 3d. <strong>of</strong> whom, Henry <strong>Rice</strong><br />

Looker, to make assurance doubly sure, married, in<br />

1716 Mary <strong>Rice</strong>, (daughter <strong>of</strong> Ebenezer, son <strong>of</strong> Benj.<br />

1 Oth. son <strong>of</strong> Deacon Edmund, )<br />

She being his 2d. cousin.<br />

They became <strong>the</strong> Ancestors <strong>of</strong> Gov. Othniel Looker,<br />

5th. Gov. <strong>of</strong> Ohio.<br />

Apropos <strong>of</strong> this marriage <strong>of</strong> cousins, Coleridge once<br />

debated with Charles Lamb, <strong>the</strong> question <strong>of</strong> consanguinity<br />

and proved, to his own satisfaction at least,<br />

that <strong>the</strong> marriage <strong>of</strong> cousins was eminently sane,<br />

proper, just and right, and fraught with <strong>the</strong> best results<br />

for humanity. Coleridge certainly had ample backing<br />

and justification for his argument in <strong>the</strong> family and<br />

descendants <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Pilgrim Deacon.<br />

Mat<strong>the</strong>w's only son Isaac died Feb. 4, 1717-18 leaving<br />

5 children; all daughters. This mistake was later<br />
