Fountain Of Youth
Fountain Of Youth: feature sponsored by
Get A
Beach Body
It’s official; we’re a nation obsessed with our appearance. One way
to ensure you have a beautiful bikini body is with regular exercise.
Regular exercise, as well as a healthy, balanced diet, is not only
great for loosing weight, it also helps prevent numerous diseases,
most notably heart disease. The UK has one of the highest rates of
death from heart disease in the world, so it’s vital to keep everything
in working order.
One of the best ways to get fit is to join your local gym.
Becoming a gym member has the advantage of the
personal trainer scheme. You can hire a personal trainer
who will design an exercise programme especially for
you, to help you stay on track and get the most out of
your gym sessions.
However, there are always those imperfections that
cannot be ironed out at the gym. If you’ve got an area of
your body that you are seriously unhappy with, why not
consider cosmetic surgery.
The UK spends more on cosmetic surgery than any other
European country (Datamonitor, 2006). A recent survey
discovered that a massive 22 millions Brits would consider
some form of cosmetic surgery. With over 320,000
procedures carried out in 2007, the most common being
Breast Augmentation, experts predict that by 2011, the
number of cosmetic procedures will break the two million
mark.
The ‘right or wrong’ debate surrounding cosmetic surgery
looks set to rage on for many years to come, but here
at Aspire, we’re big believers in personal choice – so if
you are unhappy with an area of your body and want
cosmetic surgery, just make sure you weigh up all the pros
and cons, and risks before you go ahead.
Rubicon Medical has been ridding women (and men)
across the country of their imperfections for the last 12
years. Breast Enlargement/Breast Augmentation surgery
is amongst the most popular surgery carried out by
Rubicon Medical, with outstanding results (see pics)
achieved for the competitive price of £2990. Whether you
choose to have your bangers boosted or your double-
D’s deflated, the possibilities are endless when it comes
to breast augmentation. Increasing numbers of men
are also having surgery on their chests to remove their
‘moobs’. Although this type of breast augmentation is still
uncommon, 2007 saw a 27% increase. The operation
involves removing unwanted fat and excess tissue in the
beast area to give a more sculpted, more masculine look.
For more info, visit www.rubiconmedical.com.
If you’re not quite ready to take the plunge, there are
other ways that you can give your confidence a boost.
The most obvious way to change your image is to get
your hair done. You can have anything from a simple, but
fashionable cut to a full-blown restyle with a new vibrant
colour to create your desired look.
Confidence and self-esteem can receive a big boost from
a great, show-stopping smile. It’s important that you
and your family visit a dentist on a regular basis. Melton
Orthodontics, situated in the heart of Melton Mowbray,
has been providing orthodontic treatments to residents
of Leicestershire, Nottinghamshire, Lincolnshire and
beyond, for over 15 years. They offer both NHS treatment
to children and private treatment to both children and
adults alike. They pride themselves on their service of
excellent client care, backed by advanced technology and
Melton Orthodontics for an in depth consultation will
cost just £80, while treatments can be paid for in full or
by monthly standing order on an interest free basis. So,
the smile you’ve always
wanted will no longer
be a dream - Melton
it a reality. For more
Embrace the New You
with VASER Lipo
When it comes to our bodies, we all have problem areas we dream about changing, but many of
us can be put off by extreme, painful medical procedures, as well as the after effects. However,
that’s all set to change thanks to Sound Surgical Technologies’ revolutionary new procedure, the
Vaser LipoSelection treatments.
Using the latest technology, Sound Surgical has created the latest in body contouring and is proud
to present a new method of liposuction, which offers better, more predictable results and also
causes less pain than traditional liposuction methods. The technology uses a gentle ultrasound
system that turns solid, stored fat into liquid, making the removal easier and quicker.
The key difference with the VASER Lipo System is the technology, which allows surgeons to
be very selective when removing fat. With traditional methods, the surgeon breaks up the fat
mechanically, which not only loosens the fat itself but also causes damage and trauma to the
body’s other tissues. The VASER system affects only the fat and therefore does not disrupt the tissue
between the muscle and the skin, which in turn means the skin shrinks back much faster.
The predictability of the results also means
surgeons are able to treat areas they would
previously have avoided with traditional methods,
such as more delicate areas. As the VASER system
causes less trauma, bruising and blood loss, the
recovery time is much quicker and patients may be
awake throughout the procedure. Patients should
expect to be a little tender for a few days after
the procedure, but should return to their normal
daily routine within one or two days.
There are 50 systems currently in place around the UK, including several in London, the Midlands,
Manchester and Dublin.
The treatments are available to anyone over 18 and prices are charged at around £1800 to
£2000 per area. For more information visit www.soundsurgical.com
Weddings
Glitz, glamour, celebs
and more at
2nd - 4th October @ London Earls Court &
9th - 11th October @ Birmingham NEC
2009 has already seen some of the most glamorous celeb weddings
to date – with Salma Hayek making an honest man out of one of
France’s richest men Francois Henri Pinault in a lavish ceremony in
Paris on Valentines Day, Patsy Kensit tying the knot with her DJ beau
and Denise Van Outen and Lee Mead choosing the sundrenched shores
Labriz, Seychelles to get hitched.
Celebrity or not, all brides need inspiration before their big day and
Denise Van Outen visited The National Wedding Show looking for
ideas before her April wedding to stage star Lee Mead. She enjoyed a
girly afternoon with best friend Tamara and made the most of the day
browsing all the show had to offer.
While perusing The Designer* and Boutique Areas, which are home
to the UK’s largest collection of weddings dresses - a stunning Jenny
Packham silk gown caught Denise’s eye. This proved vital inspiration
as Denise actually chose a Jenny Packham gown and looked beautiful
in the stunning empire line ‘Rosalind’ on her big day. Denise and her
close friend Tamara also pampered themselves, as every star should, in
the Brides Beauty Zone and treated themselves to a custom blend lip
gloss from Prescriptives.
The National Wedding Show’s Event Director, Ashley Roberts says: ‘It
was fantastic that Denise chose The National Wedding Show to plan
her big day, as it is the ultimate one stop shop for every part of the
perfect wedding. It is not only celebrities who attend the show for
inspiration, but many of the industries leading wedding planners get
ideas for their celebrity clients, so brides-to-be can steal some star
style for their big day too! ‘
Denise certainly got a lot
of inspiration from her
time spent at The National
Wedding Show – her recent
nuptials at the Labriz
Silhouette luxury resort in
the Seychelles saw Denise
use a number of her
purchases from the event
including customised thank
you cards by Foto-Fusion
which were sent to guests
featuring a photo of the
happy couple’s big day in
the sun.
As a special thank you gift
for all the female guests,
Denise chose favours by
Forever & Ever including
handmade bath bombs. She
also used the company’s
signature Natural Rose
Confetti and decorated the
venue for the evening with white heart shaped candles. For an extra
special touch, the couple took decorations with them purchased from
wedding favorite Confetti.
So if you feel in the mood for glamour and a celeb inspired day, book
your ticket now to The National Wedding Shows in autumn – they
take place 2 – 4 October, London Earls Court and 9 – 11 October,
Birmingham NEC. Looking like a princess is top on the priority list for
most – get a sneak preview of what celebrity brides might be wearing
at the fabulous Catwalk Shows sponsored by Wedding which showcase
all the latest bridal trends for the forthcoming season; experts offer
their advice live at The Inspiration Sessions and stand a chance in
getting a make over fit for any A-list celeb at The How to Look Good
Shows hosted by style guru Caryn Franklin.
Finally add some extra glitz to your day of planning and toast to future
happiness with a chilled glass of bubbly – you’ll find the Celebrations
Electricals On
Wedding Gift
At
Wish Lists
Recent research carried out by John Lewis has
concluded that with more couples getting married
later in life and living together before getting
married, wedding gifts lists are evolving and
electrical goods are now very popular choices.
High value gifts are also increasingly being put
onto lists, allowing guests to make a
contribution towards a sought after
product, that the couple may not be
able to afford themselves.
Tracey Yates, senior analyst, Gift List
at John Lewis says: “Two years ago,
the top 20 products on the Gift List
were exclusively traditional items from
linens, kitchenware, china and glass
but, in the second half of last year, the Wii sports
pack made it to the top 20.”
Helen Keppel-Compton, head of buying for
consumer electronics at John Lewis says:
“Electrical products are now beautifully designed
with the home in mind and can really help
enhance a room. With more people choosing to
live together first, they have already begun to
build a home for themselves and therefore can ask
for different and playful gifts.”
Aspire’s Top Wedding Gift List
Must-Haves
John Lewis Four-Slice Toaster - £44
Paul Martin, buyer for small electricals at
John Lewis says: “The
humble toaster is still
a popular choice on a
wedding gift list. The
John Lewis Four-Slice
Toaster is our best
seller. It looks great,
has wide toasting slots,
is easy to clean and
comes with a free three
year guarantee.”
Agfaphoto AF8070 LCD Digital Photo
Album and Frame, 7 Inch - £129.95
Sara Preece, buyer for imaging at John
Lewis says: “Digital photo frames are
becoming a must have on wedding gift lists.
With a sturdy leather case and seven-inch
screen, this new digital photo frame and
album allows the bride and groom to easily
transport their digital pictures of the happy
day to friends and family. When removed
from the leather case it turns into a digital
photo frame, thanks to a built-in stand.”
Nintendo Wii Console, Sports Pack -
from £175
Tom C Smith, product development
manager for entertainment systems at John
Lewis says: “The Nintendo Wii is proving
to be a really
popular choice for
wedding gift lists.
This new type of
game console is all
about having fun
and interacting with
friends and family –
it really is the new
after dinner party
game.”
Bose® SoundDock 2 Speakers - £214
Yat Wong Jones, buyer for audio and
telecoms at John Lewis says: “Speaker
Docks are a becoming a must have for
every home. The Bose
SoundDock speakers
produce a wonderful,
crisp sound that is
Retirement Show
The Best
Days
of Your
Life...
Nowadays, retirement isn’t the scary event it once was, when hitting your 60th or 65th
birthday meant a carriage clock, weekly trips to the Post Office and a free bus pass.
Retirement now means having a second chance to do all those things you dreamt about
but never quite got round to and we’ve come up with a few ideas to get you started...
Try a new sport... We all know the key to keeping healthy is a combination of good
diet and plenty of exercise, but sticking to these strict regimes can be hard if you’re
working nine ‘til five all week. With your new found freedom, you’ve got the perfect
opportunity to get in shape and what better way than trying out a new sport. From golf to
cricket, water aerobics to yoga, there’s something out there to suit all abilities and tastes.
It’s also a great way to meet new people.
Travel the world... It’s not just gap year students that can travel the world with a
backpack, older generations are increasingly getting the travel bug themselves. The
financial security that comes with being older and having no kids to worry about means
you can travel as near or as far as you like. If the thought of slumming it doesn’t appeal
to you, why not invest in a camper van and travel Europe in comfort. After all, you can
use it for spontaneous holidays and short breaks once you return.
Make the Most of Your
Retirement at. . .
P ickering’s Park
If your retirement wish is to sell up and move south, then
Pickering’s Park could have the answer to all your dreams.
Established in 2007, Pickering’s Park are now offering a new
development of retirement homes at Chilton Park. Set in the
picturesque market town of Bridgwater, Chilton Park is the
newest and most exclusive development in the West Country
and is currently the best kept secret in Somerset.
Learn something new... With all that free time on your hands, it’s the perfect
opportunity to learn something new. From foreign languages to basic IT courses, art and
crafts to first aid, your local college can provide you with the platform to enhance your
skills. Some colleges now offer free ‘silver surfer’ courses on how to use the Internet,
giving you all the know-how you need to get exploring the information super highway.
Learning something new can also help to keep your mind in shape, as research from the
Mayo Clinic in Minnesota has shown that those who regularly take part in some type of
hobby help to keep the brain active and reduce the risk of dementia.
Many people think about downsizing once they reach the age of
retirement, but many people don’t consider the possibilities that
this kind of opportunity can open up. Releasing the capital that
is currently tied up in your home will not only allow you purchase
a smaller property, it will also leave you financially secure and
able to enjoy the rest of your retirement. Chilton Park is the
perfect place to fulfil your dreams, enjoy the peaceful Somerset
countryside and make the most of your retirement.
Somerset countryside. Prices start from £129,000.
Chilton Park is ideal for those with less mobility, as the level site
provides easy access to homes for disabled or elderly residents
and the properties themselves are also set at ground level. The
park offers a safe and secure area for its residents, with a manager
available onsite 24 hours a day. Small dogs are permitted onsite,
subject to prior arrangement with the site owner.
park is located close to the River Parrett, where you can enjoy
summertime strolls along the riverbank. Nearby you’ll find the
Quantock Hills, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, where
you can admire superb views and tranquil surroundings. Exmoor
National Park is also a place you can enjoy exploring again and
again, either on foot or by bike, and where you will find great
fishing spots, the chance to try out some horse riding, as well as
relaxing pursuits such as bird watching.
Charity work... Most charities are suffering the horrendous effects of the recession,
but while money may be a little too tight for grand donations, you can still help in other
ways. Get involved working on the frontline, whether through getting about and out
raising funds with coffee mornings and car boot sales, or taking up a few shifts in your
local charity shop, your help can really make a difference.
Retirement Show
The CLA Game Fair
The
Your retirement gives you the chance to do some
of the things you’ve always wanted to do; write
a book, restore a vintage vehicle, or sell-up and
move to the coast. If you dream of buying your
own caravan and living by the sea, or even in
the heart of the country, but need to get your
new home to your dream location, fear not –
Aspire has the answer…
With over 25 years experience Hi-Line
Transport is the haulage company for you. Their
experience and unrivalled knowledge has made
them THE specialist caravan haulage company.
Established by Rory McDonald and David
Molyneaux in 1983, Hi-Line Transport became
a limited company in 1987, and has continued
to grow and thrive ever since to include a broad
customer base of dealerships, manufacturers
and leisure groups, as well as many sites and
private customers.
Rory told Aspire: “David Molyneaux and I started
moving caravans in 1983 on behalf of his
company Westfield Caravans. Hi-Line Caravan
Transport became a separate company in 1984
and then became Hi-Line Transport Ltd in 1987.
We were moving a lot of other goods around
then and we didn’t want to restrict the business
to just caravans. These days about 95 per cent
of what we do is caravans but it was a lot more
mixed at that time; it’s just how the business
goes.”
Hi-Line
spaces made for the earlier smaller caravans but
not great for the newer larger versions, but it’s
all worth it when you complete the delivery and
the customer is happy.”
As well as having over 25 years experience
in caravan transport, Rory is also the current
chairman of the Road Haulage Association
(RHA) Caravan Hauliers Group, since 1993 in
fact. He said: “The RHA is a very useful group
to be part of. Not only do you have the support,
knowledge and experience of other members at
your disposal, the RHA also helped establish a
code of practice for caravan haulage, alongside
the Health and Safety Executive. Also the RHA
regularly meet up with the VOSA (Vehicle
Inspectorate and Traffic Area Network) and the
Department of Transport.”
To celebrate their 25th anniversary, Hi-Line
Transport have launched a brand new website
– www.caravantransporter.co.uk. The website,
which was officially launched in May, outlines,
in detail, all the services offered by Hi-Line
Transport; the new-look website has gone down
a storm with customers and industry insides, so
why not take a look for yourself.
With all this expertise, it’s not hard to see why
so many people, year after year, choose Hi-Line
Transport for their caravan haulage needs…
“As one of the countries leading distributors of
holiday homes we sell hundreds of units every
year. We only use Hi Line transport to move these
homes as they not only offer a friendly, prompt
and efficient service but most importantly the
caravans arrive safely and on time. No job is
too small and no job too difficult. The complete
service!” Rob Walters, Director of Westfield
Caravans Limited
“Since we opened our Caravan Park many years
ago we have used the team from Hi-line and
at all times we have found them to provide a
professional, efficient and courteous services.
For caravan transport we wouldn't use anyone
else!” Peter Dodd, Bridge House Marina and
Caravan Park.
As we look forward to the summer, we start to plan
how we are going to spend it and, indeed, how we
will entertain the children throughout the holidays.
Stalk This Way…
Cervus-UK are
a shooting and
stalking agency,
specialising in
tailor-made hunting
trips. With over
25 years of field
sports experience
throughout the world,
Cervus-UK offer their clients the very best sport, based on their own
exacting requirements (at locations throughout the UK and Europe),
either guided by the Cervus-UK team, or by their network of quality
‘tried and tested’ guides and stalkers.
Formed in 1995 as Leafield Deer Management Services, Cervus-UK
came into being in 2005, after founder, Owen Beardsmore, felt it
was time for a name change: “I wanted the company to reflect the
broader spectrum of hunting services that we now offered, such
as professional deer management, accompanied deer stalking,
foreign hunting trips and related products and services. Our name is
synonymous with quality at a fair price; thanks to our many years of
experience, we can offer the very best service at a competitive cost.”
Enjoy a better stalking experience and a greater depth of view,
with a high quality high seat. Providing you with a better shot
and a safer vantage point, High Seats offer the best products in
the business.
High Seats are the only company to offer the combination of
a free-standing and lean-to high seat in one. Both single and
double seats are available and have been designed to offer a
larger platform. Single seats measure 32” by 20” and doubles
52” by 20”, both measure 10ft from ground to seat, allowing a
wider viewing area. All seats come with an adjustable shooting
rail, which can be moved up and down to offer a better shooting
range, as well as towards and away from the seat itself, providing
much more comfort.
The seating area itself is made from timber, which has been
pressure treated, and is therefore more hard wearing and
easily replaceable. The seat design allows the user to take
advantage of the full width of the platform, allowing space for
you and all your equipment. The seats are also galvanised, so
are maintenance free and corrosion resistant. Foot brackets are
available and can be used to create a lower seat if required.
When converted to free-standing, the high seats have a large
footprint, making them much safer and a lot more stable. The
free-standing footprint measures approximately 12ft by 9ft and
has been created to conform to the current legislation relevant
to the use of ladders. The design makes them incredibly stable,
even in windy conditions.
Muntjac & Fallow Deer Stalking
Cervus-UK have hunting areas that cover in excess of 20,000 acres
in south Oxfordshire, The Cotswolds and Leicestershire. There is a
possibility to shoot both Fallow deer and Muntjac during your hunt
on most of their estates.
Wood Pigeon Shooting
The Wood Pigeon is both Britain’s major agricultural bird pest and
one of the most popular species for sporting shotgun shooting. It is
legal to shoot the bird all the year round and Cervus-UK have many
clients from all over Europe who visit to enjoy the sport this testing
bird provides.
The best times are in late winter/springtime when the pigeons
are feeding on winter rape and newly sown fields, or in the late
summer when they feed on newly harvested fields.
Sport A b road
Thanks to a wealth of experience, Cervus-UK are able to
organise shooting trips pretty much anywhere in Europe,
including Poland, France and the Czech Republic.
business and offer a safe and enjoyable stalking experience. As a
stalker myself I have the relevant skills and practice to know that
safety is of the utmost importance and our design reflects this.”
These high seats have been designed with input from
professional stalkers, including members of the Forestry
Commission, and are popular amongst the professional stalking
community, as well as recreational shooters. Bespoke seats
Based in Morayshire in the north east of Scotland, Stalking School
offers you the chance to learn exactly how to stalk deer, whilst gaining
your Deer Stalking Level One and Two Certificates.
Established in 2006 by John Allan and his friends Gary Munn and Andrew Chadderton,
Stalking School grew out of customer demand: “I’ve owned another company – Country
Services – since 1994, and many people were coming to me to do Level One of the Deer
Stalking Certificates, but we were unable to get them through Level Two, so I started
Stalking School,” John told Aspire.
Stalking School has been at the fore front of training ever since and currently has many
opportunities to do both the voluntary Level One and Level Two Deer Stalking Certificate
(DSC), as well as other skill and technique courses…
• DSC Level One – Two-Day Course.
This course includes a day of revision for Level One, shooting practice, Level One
DSC Examination and Shooting Test.
• DSC Level Two – Two-Day Course.
This course takes you on to prepare for the Level Two portfolio. It intends to give a
higher level of understanding of what will be required for your portfolio, and some
venison to take home. The course includes two stalking outings, and the Level Two
Gralloch and Lardering course.
• These two course can be combined into a four-day course.
• Level Two Gralloch and Lardering – One-Day Course.
This one-day course will prepare you as part of your DSC Level Two portfolio, and aims
to give a higher level of skill and understanding of what will be required for Meat
Hygiene (LANTRA) and for your DSC portfolio.
• Other courses available include Butchery and Venison Craft, Sporting Rifle Techniques
and Ballistics, and Introduction to Stalking.
John added: “My lads and I are accredited witnesses for the Level Two Examination and
Shooting Test and I am also an accredited assessor, so you can rest assured we’ll teach you
what to do and when to do it – we pass on the right knowledge in order for you to achieve
the prerequisite standards for passing the DSC. All our courses are run in small groups,
meaning the atmosphere is always friendly and helpful.”
Dates and prices for the courses offered by John and Stalking School can be found online
at www.stalkingschool.co.uk. Alternatively, you can email John directly at
j.allan121@btinternet.com.
“I’ve got over 40 years experience in this industry and I love what I do, and I hope it
shows in the quality and care taken with my courses,” John explained. “Although the
DSC are not mandatory, I think it’s an excellent idea for anyone with a passion for deer
stalking to take them, simply because it means everyone is working to the same principles;
everyone benefits – the stalkers and the animals.”
As well as running these courses, Stalking School is also happy to run corporate activity
days for team building, and business meetings with a difference.
Love Our Pets
The Animals
Went In
The love affair between humans and animals has blossomed
over thousands of years and with the recent celebrity toydog
craze, we love animals now more than ever. However, despite
owners raving about their pets, many aren’t protecting them
against life-threatening diseases.
Vaccinations are used to prevent often fatal diseases, such
as parvovirus and distemper in dogs, leukaemia in cats,
myxomatosis and viral haemorrhagic disease in rabbits,
plus many more. Thanks to the PDSA, vaccinating your
furry friend just got easier. To help owners learn more about
vaccinating their pets, PDSA has produced a FREE vaccination
leaflet offering advice and guidance on protecting pets from
preventable illnesses. For more information, please visit www.
pdsa.org.uk
The Ancient Egyptians had such a deep respect for animals,
of all kinds, that they were a daily feature in the religious
lives of farmers, craftsmen, priests and rulers. The Ancient
Egyptians thought extremely highly of the great cats of Africa,
with the Pharaoh often being compared to a ‘fearless lion’.
Smaller cats, such as the Cheetah, were tamed and kept as
pets, but others were hunted and killed for their skins. Other
highly respected animals include Rams, a symbol of fertility,
Dogs, used for hunting and guard duty, and Cattle, a prized
possession providing meat, milk and leather.
Domestic animals need our love and care, but obviously
owning one is too much for some, which is why Aspire would
like to encourage our readers who are thinking of getting a
pet to do their research first before they take on such a big
commitment.
Unfortunately, our domestic pets are the latest victims of the
recession (according to the RSPCA). The Royal Society for
the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals said that they’ve seen a
Two-by- Two…
57% increase in the number of abandoned
animals they’re rescuing. Statistics from the
animal welfare charity show that in 2007,
7,347 animals were abandoned, but that
figure rocketed to 11,586 in 2008 - an
increase of 57%.
Instead of buying your pet from a pet shop,
Aspire would like to suggest going to a
reputable breeder or going to an animal
shelter and adopting a rescued animal. The
countless rescue centres across the Aspire
region, sadly, always have plenty of pets for
you to choose from, whether you’re looking
for a dog, cat or even a rabbit.
Before you can take your new pet home,
you’ll need to make sure your home is safe,
something which is often overlooked. Pet
proofing your home can lower the risk of
a serious accident occurring. A pet owner
needs to be aware of several potential
dangers. Poisons in the home that can kill or
seriously injure your pet include some kinds
of house plants (dieffenbachia, philodendron,
hyacinth, and mistletoe), pesticides, and
medications. Low electrical cords are
extremely hazardous when chewed. Keep
harmful objects out of your pet's reach. A
little prevention may be just enough to avoid
a pet tragedy from happening in your home.
Revolutionary Substitute For Elizabethan Collar:
Dermapetwear Protective Jackets
Officially launched in February this year, Dermapetwear Protective Jackets are
the brain-child of Sylvia Beeby, who developed the product after her own brown
Burmese, Suky, developed a skin condition that she continually licked and bit at.
“Suky spent much of her life in a dreaded Elizabethan collar,
which never really seemed to help her problem. Her illness
seemed to be a never-ending cycle; we would clear up the rash
with antibiotics and steroids only for it to return a week later
– it was very upsetting watching my beloved pet leading a very
poor quality of life. After three desperate years, I trawled the
internet for some kind of protection in the form of a jacket,
but to no avail. So, I decided to design one myself. I actually
started off with some altered baby grows but after working
closely with a friend who works for the RSPCA and my vet, I
developed Dermapetwear Protective Jackets,” Sylvia explained.
Dermapetwear Protective Jackets are available in three sizes:
small, medium and large (up to 12”, up to 14”, and over 15”
from neck to tail). The jackets are made from soft anti-bacterial
stretch fabric that, along with medication from your vet, can
aid recovery. They can also be machine washed over and over.
The jackets have also been designed so cats can use the litter
tray without removal being necessary, and they remain secure
thanks to a built-in collar; they’re also ideal for small dogs, as
modelled by Doodle (see photo). Each jacket, regardless of
size, costs just £31.95, with UK delivery £3.95.
Aspire recently awarded Sylvia and Dermapetwear Ltd with
a Certificate of Recognition for Design and Innovation. On
hearing the news of this accolade, Sylvia said: “Thank you
for this Certificate Aspire. I’m so proud of these protective
jackets, which I feel are much kinder to cats; they also allow
cats to move around freely, feeling with their whiskers, which
the Elizabethan collar doesn’t allow them to do. My Suky has
been much happier since wearing the jacket, and I’m confident
other cats will be too.”
Sylvia has always had a passion for the welfare of animals,
as well as an eye for innovative design. She retired in 1999
after spending nine years with School Trends, suppliers of
schoolwear, where she was part of a team that turned the
company into a multi-million pound turnover. She was called
out of retirement in 2001 by her co-Director, Dave Cottrell,
to start another successful, multi million international company
(La Beeby), suppliers of Beauty Therapy uniforms. At the age
of 65, Sylvia realised her real passion of working with animals
and created Dermapetwear out of her empathy for animals.
She would like to realise her dream of making Dermapetwear
very successful so that she can support animal charities more
ardently than she already does.
Leisure
UK Outdoors
Have a Summer
Full of Fun...
The summer holidays are nearly upon us and that
means come rain or shine, you’ve got to keep the kids
entertained somehow. Instead of struggling to keep
them out of trouble at home, why not consider making
their leisure time fun and educational, with some of
the region’s best days out.
The National Space Centre, in Leicester, offers
exciting exhibitions and an awe-inspiring visit. The
six differently themed areas provide everything from
space capsules, satellites and rockets, to interactive
experiences. As well as being a great, fun place
to explore, visitors can also learn all about the
universe, planets and space travel, meaning kids will
learn something whilst they enjoy themselves.
If you’re trying to find fun things to do at home, drag the kids
away from the TV and get them experimenting with something new. Let them get their hands
dirty in the kitchen baking cakes and making flapjacks. You can even get them involved in
the garden, growing not only plants and flowers, but vegetables as well.
Alternatively, if you run a youth group, why not enlist the services of the Journey Man.
Providing tales from around the globe, this fun and educational character can help kids get
involved in the storytelling process, whilst learning all about other countries and cultures.
If your leisure time involves more specialist pursuits, such as diving or flying, ensure you’re
up to date with all your qualifications and medicals this summer, so you can enjoy your
hobby to the full.
Explore the Great Outdoors
Now the warm weather is upon us, it’s the
perfect time to get out and about in the
great British countryside. So, ditch the games
consoles, television and the internet and go
and explore some of the country’s glorious
green areas.
If you’re planning a holiday this summer then
why not make it a green one. Choosing a
caravanning break over a foreign package
holiday will not only be kinder on your pocket
this year, it’ll also help to reduce you carbon
footprint. A single short haul flight to Europe
produces a whopping 600,000kg of C0²,
compared to just 161kg produced by towing
a caravan 400 miles by car (http://www.
busyoutdoors.com/caravanning_articles/
Green_Caravanning.html). If you choose to
travel by public transport, you’ll reduce your
carbon footprint even further. So holidaying
at home this year is certainly the eco-friendly
choice.
The devastating affect of the credit crunch
means there’ll be many people who simply
cannot afford to take a summer holiday this
year, but that doesn’t mean you have to miss
out; just enjoy some great days out instead.
Brixworth Country Park, overlooking the
Pitsford Reservoir in Northamptonshire,
was developed with Millenium Commission
funding and offers an amazing array of
things to see and do on a budget. The park
has been specially designed to be accessible
for all, regardless of disability, and is ideal
for admiring stunning views and soaking up
some summer sunshine. Kids can be kept
easily entertained in the sensory garden,
spotting birds and wildlife, or even with a
game of football. The park provides plenty
of wide open spaces for kite flying, as well as
quiet areas for a little peace and relaxation.
Leicestershire’s largest park is Bradgate Park,
situated in Charnwood Forest. Birth place
of Lady Jane Grey, the park itself is home to
all sorts of wildlife, including birds, rabbits
and deer, making it a great place to enjoy
a slower pace. There are also play areas,
tennis courts, bowling greens and a multiuse
games area, catering to all tastes and
interests.
Discover The World
Through The Eyes Of
The
Journey
Man
Enjoy a unique and inspiring experience, marvel
at tales from around the world and explore your
own imagination with the help of the Journey
Man, winner of our Certificate of Recognition for
Unique Educational Services.
The Journey Man, constructed from the
imagination of Johnny Gillett, is a world-travelled
mime artist, storyteller, drama teacher and youth
worker. Having spent many years exploring
different countries and cultures, Johnny made his
home in Cheshire two years ago, where he set
about transforming his experiences into drama
workshops and storytelling programmes that
children of all ages could enjoy.
The verbal and visual practitioner, who has
become a big hit in schools across the country,
tailors workshops and programmes to coincide
with children’s Core Learning, covering a
whole host of cultures and time periods. The
Journey Man is able to tell stories relating to
Aboriginal Australia, the Caribbean, Japan and
New Zealand to name but a few, whilst drama
workshops can be tailored around subjects such
as Aztecs, Vikings and Romans. The workshops
encourage children to explore different angles of
stories, create their own stories and characters
using various techniques, as well as performing
their creations.
Johnny says: “Children always react really
positively to the experience. I think part of that
is because everyone loves a good story and
also because they get to be part of that story,
exploring ideas and the way characters act,
as well as putting forward their own ideas. The
workshops are interactive, allowing children the
opportunity to draw on their own imagination.
It also encourages them to become good
listeners.”
With 20 years teaching experience, Johnny
has the skills and training to adapt to teaching
different children. Working as a solo artist also
allows him the flexibility to adapt to different
time scales and school routines, and a range of
workshops can easily be created and adapted for
children aged three to 18.
When organising workshops for older children,
Johnny focuses on the issues and metaphors
within stories, encouraging discussions about
how characters will overcome these challenges.
An emphasis on teamwork and the importance of
being able to work well alongside others is also a
popular element of the programme.
On receiving his Certificate, Johnny says: “I’m
so pleased that Aspire recognise my workshops
offer something a little different and I’m delighted
to have been awarded this Certificate.”
Senior Sales Executive, Elaine Ellis, nominated
Johnny for the Certificate, she says: “I think the
Journey Man offers children a unique and fun
way to learn, as well as providing the opportunity
to learn about other cultures and countries.”
Magic Of Norfolk
At
Little Haven Caravan
And Camping Park
If you’re looking for the ultimate escape from
it all this summer, you won’t find a better
place for a break than in the unspoilt Norfolk
countryside. Nestled away quietly in the
most beautiful area of this wonderful county,
Little Haven Caravan and Camping Park is
perfect for a weekend break or a lazy summer
holiday. Aspire believe this park is one of
the county’s best kept secrets and because it
offers an excellent base for discovering the
magic of Norfolk, we’ve awarded Little Haven
a Certificate of Recognition for Leisure and
Tourism.
You won’t find a friendlier place to stay than
this small, family-run caravan park, owned by
Patricia Lunnon. Living up to its name, Little
Haven provides adults with an unrivalled rural
haven, situated away from the busy seaside
resorts. Patricia and family pride themselves
on the cleanliness of the facilities here, as well
as the warm welcome that awaits their guests.
Patricia explains: “We’re a well secluded,
pretty, quiet park and we’re situated in one of
the most beautiful areas of Norfolk. Our guests
are so taken with the place that they return
every year and we have built up many regular
customers over the years.”
Situated within easy reach of the coast and its
magnificent beaches, the park is just six miles
from the popular seaside resort of Cromer
and only three miles away from Aylsham, a
picturesque market town. You’ll find Cromer
packed with activities and sights to suit all
tastes, whatever your age. With its famous pier,
huge beaches and magnificent cliffs, you’ll
find the coast has plenty to offer, whilst the
museums and little Victorian streets provide
a step back in time. Aylsham is also steeped
in history – dating back to pre-Norman times
– and offers a wide range of locally produced
goods, as well as plenty of places to enjoy
some local foods.
The 24 spacious pitches - all with electric
hook-up - are situated around the edge of the
Park, which is surrounded by hedges and trees,
giving guests a more secluded and sheltered
place to relax. The park is serviced by a hard
surfaced road, allowing guests easier access
to pitches, and ample parking is provided. The
central area of the park is home to a beautiful
pergola and seating area, providing the ideal
place to unwind and enjoy the sunshine. With
stunning, well-kept gardens, as well as a fish
pond, you won’t even need to leave the park to
appreciate the magic of Norfolk.
The onsite facilities have everything you will
need during your stay. The heated toilet blocks
offer showers, sinks, washing up and laundry
facilities – complete with free hot water – and
are cleaned to the highest standard. Pets are
also welcome onsite and park is open from 1st
March to 31st October.
Norfolk really does offer something for
everyone and Little Haven is the best location
for experiencing it all. The nearby Weavers
Way, which goes from Cromer all the way
down to Great Yarmouth, is a fantastic walking
route for seeing more of this beautiful area.
Fishing is also hugely popular locally and ideal
sites for sea and coarse angling can be found
within easy reach of Little Haven.
The countryside here is teaming with wildlife;
in fact it’s one of the country’s top destinations
for bird watchers, with Pensthorpe Nature
Reserve having recently featured on the BBC’s
Springwatch. There are plenty of places to get
spotting, including Berney Marshes, which is
an RSPB reserve, as well as the nature reserves
at East Wretham Heath and Foxley Wood.
Have a fun day spotting seals at Blakeney
Point, situated on the north Norfolk coast,
where you’ll also find many sea bird colonies,
as well as unspoilt coastal views and glorious
sandy beaches. Why not enjoy a hawk walk
at the East Anglian Falconry, where you can
enjoy the company of Harris the hawk, get the
opportunity to handle him and find out more
about birds of prey.
Dominated by its cathedral, Norwich is a
medieval city that combines history, culture,
great attractions and fantastic shopping
opportunities. Norwich also offers plenty of
night time entertainment with many eating
establishments, theatres and a cinema.
Bure Valley Railway, Wroxham Barns and
Blickling Hall – reported to be the birthplace of
Anne Boleyn, second wife of Henry VIII – are
also well worth a visit. If you want a break
from cooking after a busy day exploring then
there are two pubs within walking distance,
both offering hearty food and traditional ales.
On receiving the Certificate
of Recognition for Leisure
and Tourism, Patricia says: “I
think it’s magic. I’m so pleased
to have been awarded this
Certificate and I am so proud
that all our hard work has been
acknowledged. We have spent
many years getting Little Haven
up to the standard it is now and
as an adults only park, we aim
to offer a more relaxing holiday
for couples looking to holiday in
Norfolk.”
Senior Sales Executive, Barbara
Stone, says: “I am absolutely
thrilled that Little Haven
Caravan and Camping Park have
been awarded a Certificate of
Recognition. This adult-only site
offers a real rural retreat and is
the perfect base for discovering
the magic of Norfolk. I
nominated Little Haven for this
Certificate because I believe
they offer an amazing location,
fantastic facilities and a warm
welcome, and that’s what a great
holiday is all about.”
Discover the magic of Norfolk
this summer with a stay at Little
Jackson’s Caravan Park
Perfect
Holidays at
Boat Lane Caravan
and Camping...
Caravan and camping holidays are facing a huge revival this year
due to the credit crunch and there’s no better place to enjoy a budget
break than Boat Lane Caravan and Camping. Nestling quietly in the
Nottinghamshire countryside, Boat Lane is ideal for anyone looking for
a short weekend break or a longer summer holiday. Set in 10 acres of
glorious green fields, the site can be found close to the scenic hamlet of
Bleasby - guaranteeing your holiday is a quiet and relaxing one.
Welcoming tents, caravans and
motorhomes, the site offers 250 spacious
pitches. For those who like their home
comforts, 100 of these provide electric
hook-up. The onsite facilities offer
everything you will need during your stay,
including showers and toilet blocks, a food
storage area and washing up facilities. The
park is family-friendly and has a games
room onsite, which is ideal for keeping the
kids entertained. Pets are also welcome.
The site offers secure electric gates and
CCTV to ensure you have a safe camping
experience. Boat Lane also offers a
storage facility for those who wish to store
their caravan or tent onsite, making the
journey there that little bit easier. This can
be discussed with the manager.
Boat Lane is ideally situated for you
to enjoy the warm summer weather
with regular weekend breaks and the
surrounding area offers plenty of fun for
families and couples of all ages. Newarkon-Trent,
a pretty market town, is just a
short drive from Bleasby and is home to
the Millgate Museum – with over 70,000
historical items on display – and the
Newark Castle Gardens, which are both
well worth a visit.
The city of Nottingham can be found just
a few miles away and provides everything
from fantastic shopping to great sight
seeing experiences. Nottingham Castle
should be the top of any visitor’s list and
with its vibrant museum, art gallery and
magnificent gardens, you’ll find it easy to
keep the kids happy. For a spookier day
out, why not visit the Galleries of Justice
and discover what prison life was like
during the 17th and 18th centuries or take
a look at the Caves of Nottingham, which
boasts tunnels dating back more than
500 years. Explore Robin Hood’s home at
Sherwood Forest and discover the truth
about the outlaw.
When it comes to shopping, you’ll find
Nottingham offers everything from High
Street stores to independent boutiques.
With two shopping centres and streets
lined with shops, you’ll find everything you
could possible want. The city’s cinema and
ice arena can easily keep the kids out of
trouble while you shop ‘til you drop.
Farnsfield’s White Post Farm is another
local attraction that’s great for younger
children. Housing all the traditional
farmyard animals, alongside wallabies,
llamas, rheas and deer, as well as an
indoor play area, White Post Farm is one
of Nottinghamshire’s most popular days
out.
If it’s more leisurely pursuits you’re looking
to find then why not spend a day enjoying
a round of golf at one of the many local
courses. Situated just 300 yards from
the campsite itself you will also find a
fishing lake, ideal for spending a relaxing
afternoon enjoying the peace and quiet
of the great outdoors. The beautiful
countryside location of the campsite also
make it perfect for walking, cycling and
birdwatching.
Lincoln is also easily reachable by car and
as one of the top five tourism destinations
in the UK, it offers something for everyone.
The medieval city boasts many historical
landmarks, including Lincoln Cathedral
and Lincoln Castle – home to one of only
four surviving copies of the Magna Carta.
Within easy walking distance you will
find a pub, for hearty, traditional evening
meals, as well as a shop and post office
- ideal for picking up all your essentials.
White Park Homes
When we think of holidays in Britain, we usually think of
donkey rides and sand castles on the beach, ice creams along
the promenade, funfairs on the piers and silly souvenirs.
There are a handful of places in Britain where you can still
get all this, and more, from your holiday; one of which is
within easy driving distance of the Aspire region – Skegness.
Situated just a mile from Skegness centre, Jackson’s Caravan
Park provides the perfect base for families looking to enjoy a
traditional holiday during one of the worst economic times
of the last two decades.
Facilities
Established since 1927, Jackson’s Caravan Park has been
run by the Jackson family for the last 44 years. The site is
open from March 15th until October 18th 2009 and if you’d
like to rent your own pitch for the duration of the year, it’ll
only cost you £1,725 (including utility bills and rates). But,
Mr Jackson is currently offering a 10% discount for any
new caravans to the site, as well as free connection to all the
mains services, such as gas, electricity and water.
As British caravanning holidays are currently enjoying
a revival, Jackson’s Caravan Park are offering you the
opportunity to secure your place on their site by purchasing
a new or second-hand caravan and basing it at Jackson’s.
Caravans are available from £7,500 second hand up to
£50,000 brand new, so there’s something to suit every (tight)
budget, even during the recession.
Further Afield
This child and pet-friendly site is just 15 minutes from the
seafront and the pier, which is one of the main attractions
of the town. The Pier has stood for 125 years and nowadays
offers an array of attractions including Ten Pin Bowling,
Laserquest, Captain Kids Adventureworld, and the latest
hi-tech video games.
The shopping areas of the town, including Lumley Road and
Roman Bank, are popular with visitors, as are
the array of seasonal shops that sell kites, buckets and spades
– perfect for playing on the beach.
The Fairy Dell paddling pool is another big hit with Skeggy
regulars. Despite closing in 2004 because of health and
safety fears, the Fairy Dell reopened in 2006 after a major
refurbishment during which many improvements were
made to the pool such as clean-filtered water and extra water
features.
A holiday in Skegness gives visitors the ideal opportunity to
venture a little further afield and explore the Lincolnshire
countryside and the Wolds, as well as the historic city of
Lincoln. Further up the coast, visitors will find other holiday
resorts: Mablethorpe, Sutton-on-Sea, Ingoldmells and
Chapel St Leonards.
Recognition
With over 200 privately-owned static caravans, Jackson’s
Caravan Park is a well established traditional park, selected
by Aspire as our Ideal Holiday Destination.
On hearing the news of our Ideal Holiday Destination
accolade, Mr Jackson said: “Thank you Aspire. It’s nice to
know that the blood, sweat and tears we’ve put into the site
has paid off. Many of our visitors return year after year but
this official recognition couldn’t have come at a better time
– thank you!”
Senior Sales Executive, Sophie Webb, added: “Many families
from the Aspire region spend their summer holidays along
the east coast of Lincolnshire, so there was no question of
who to nominate for this accolade – Jackson’s Caravan Park
was the obvious choice and I’m so glad the Aspire directors
agreed.”
Money Matters
Trouble Abroad
Have A
In recent months, the press has been littered
with stories concerning British holidaymakers
flouting local laws and customs
whilst abroad. Every year many Brits land
themselves in hot water simply because they
didn’t do their homework before jetting off to
warmer climates. This year, the Foreign and
Commonwealth Office are trying to prevent
holiday-makers ruining their break with a
huge fine, or even worse, a prison sentence,
and are urging people to visit their website
before they travel.
If you’re lucky enough to be heading abroad
this summer, avoid making a holiday faux pas
with Aspire’s handy guide to local customs
and laws...
Before You Go
If possible, book all or part of your
holiday on a credit card. By doing
this, you’ll have the added protection
of Section 75 of the Consumer Credit
Act, which makes the card company
jointly liable if anything goes wrong
with your holiday. Section 75 covers
purchases from £100 to £30,000, but
you only need to place a percentage
of the total value on your credit card
to be covered by Section 75 at the
full cost.
However, you need to ensure that
the company billing you is the same
company you’re buying through, as
if payment goes through a sister
company, you might not be covered.
Don’t Forget
As soon as you book your holiday, it’s
a good idea to buy travel insurance;
make sure your insurance covers you
Happy Holiday
Everyone loves going on holiday, but after saving all year in order to jet off to
sunnier climes, it’s vital that you ensure your money is safe, not only as you
book but also once you get there. So, if you’re one of the lucky few who are
off abroad this summer, this is essential reading…
if you have to cancel the holiday for
any reason.
Spending Money
Many people don’t think about the
numerous options open to them when
it comes to their holiday spending
money. There are five main ways to
carry your hard-earned dosh – cash,
credit and debit cards, pre-pay
currency card, or traveller’s cheques,
all of which have different pros and
cons; it all depends on what YOU
want…
Cash – the most common form of
holiday spending money allows you
to know the exact exchange rate, so
you know how much everything costs.
However, if the cash is stolen, or lost,
it’s gone! Worryingly, crime is rise
all over the world as the recession
tightens its grip.
There are many places to get your
foreign cash from; the bureau de
change at the airport is convenient,
but might not necessarily give you the
best rate – for competitive rates, try
the Post Office (who take very little
commission) or the Internet.
Debit Card – This is the ideal solution
if you don’t want to carry a large
amount of cash; you can take your
debit card abroad and withdraw
money as and when you need it from
cash machines. This used to be pricey,
but things have changed; when I was
in Spain last summer, it actually cost
me less to withdraw money over
there than it did when I found myself
short of cash in Scarborough, so had
to resort to a mobile ATM (also often
seen in newsagents and nightclubs).
However, the downside to this method
is you don’t actually know what the
exchange rate is, meaning your cash
might not be worth as much.
Credit Card – Again, using your
credit card abroad will give you
added protection under Section 75
of the Consumer Credit Act, however,
check first as card companies are not
by Laura Merry
legally obliged to offer protection
outside of the UK.
Don’t be tempted to use your credit
card to withdraw cash though as
not only will you be charged for the
withdrawal, the interest charged on
cash withdrawals is usually high.
Traveller’s Cheques – Unfortunately,
Traveller’s Cheques are becoming
harder to cash; however, if they are
stolen or lost, they can quickly be
replaced.
Pre-Pay Currency Card – These
little-known cards allow you to reap
the advantages of using cash, as well
as the advantages of a debit card.
They work like gift cards; you put
an amount on the card and then use
it to pay for items, or make cash
withdrawals – the key is that you can
only spend the amount on the card,
meaning you can’t go over budget.
Also, it can be easily replaced if lost,
stolen, or damaged.
So, wherever you’re off to this
summer, make sure your hard-earned
cash is safe!
Keeping Out of
Trouble Abroad
Barbados – It is an offence to wear camouflage clothing whilst in Barbados,
even for children.
China – When finishing a meal, do not leave your chopsticks in your bowl,
this signifies an offering to the dead and is offensive to the Chinese. Instead,
place them flat on the table next to your bowl.
Egypt – It is important to dress modestly when visiting traditional areas with
mosques and markets, especially for women – remember to cover your
upper arms and legs. It’s also offensive to show the soles of your feet. Whilst
public displays of affection may be accepted in tourist resorts, they are likely
to cause offence in other areas. Drinking alcohol anywhere other than a
licensed bar is not permitted.
Greece – Heavy fines and prison sentences are imposed on anyone who
behaves indecently in public. This includes flashing and mooning, so it
might be a good idea to keep your alcohol consumption under control whilst
holidaying in Greece.
Indonesia – It is illegal to gamble.
Japan – Although socially acceptable in Britain, blowing your nose in public
in Japan is considered highly offensive. Japan also has strict anti-stimulant
drug laws and therefore the use, or even possession, of items such a Vicks
inhaler is banned and could land you in trouble.
Madagascar – It is considered a taboo – or fady – to point with an
outstretched finger.
Maldives – Topless sunbathing and nudism, even on resort islands, are
prohibited. Same sex relationships are against the law in the Maldives and
anyone convicted faces large fines and lengthy prison sentences.
Morocco – It is a punishable offence to have sex outside of marriage in
Morocco and several Brits were arrested for this type of offence during 2007.
Same sex couples should also be aware that homosexuality is illegal.
Singapore – It is against the law to chew gum in Singapore.
Slovenia – Anyone visiting this country must register with the local police
within three days of arriving. Most hotels and guest houses automatically
register you on arrival, however if you are on a self-catering holiday, or
visiting relatives, you will need to register yourself.
Spain – The consumption of alcohol on the street is banned in some areas
of Spain and doing so could land you with a fine.
Turkey – Surprisingly, the use of metal detectors is against the law in Turkey.
A smoking ban is also currently being put in place. Smoking is now banned
on all public transport, stadiums and playgrounds, whilst a ban in bars and
restaurants will come into effect during July 2009. Although not against the
law, keeping your hands in your pockets is disrespectful, as is sitting with
your legs crossed.
United Arab Emirates – Women are encouraged to dress modestly, covering
the tops of arms and legs. Be aware that behaviour you take for granted at
home may not be tolerated in other countries; public displays of affection,
including kissing, could lead to you being arrested and imprisoned. Having
sex outside of marriage is also illegal. Obscene acts, such as swearing or
making rude gestures, are considered an offence and if prosecuted, you
could face up to six months in prison. It is also an offence to drink or appear
to be drunk in public.
General things to remember...
• Most countries require foreign visitors to carry ID with them at all times
so it’s a good idea to carry your passport, or at least a copy of it, wherever
you go.
• Jay walking is against the law in many foreign countries.
• Be careful where you are taking photographs. Many countries forbid
anyone from photographing anything that is potentially sensitive, including
military buildings, government offices and even police cars and airports.
By Sarah Ross
Seychelles – It is an offence, even for children, to wear any camouflage • Remember that good manners are always appreciated, no matter what
clothing. Topless sunbathing is usually tolerated, but it’s usually best to
country you are visiting.
check with your tour guide. Homosexuality is also illegal in the Seychelles.
Every now and then it’s important to take
time out from your busy schedule to relax and
unwind, away from the stresses and strains of
daily life. With British people having some of
the longest working hours in Europe, making
the most of your down time has never been so
important.
Despite the recession and constant media
reports of doom and gloom, it IS still possible
to enjoy a holiday this year, and a luxury one at
that. You don’t need to sacrifice life’s luxuries
with a week wet and cold in a tent no bigger
than your garden shed – by spending your
money wisely and researching the area before
you travel will ensure your 2009 holiday will be
the best, and most relaxing, yet.
You don’t need to go abroad to enjoy a truly
relaxing holiday, in fact with the Euro so strong
against the pound, you might as well keep your
hard-earned cash in the British economy, as
you’ll be paying about the same across Europe
as you would be here!
The UK has an amazing array of
accommodation solutions to suit every
requirement, taste, and budget. From
charming B&Bs and friendly guesthouses to
modern barn conversions and five-star hotels,
the UK is brimming with every kind of holiday
accommodation you can think of.
Health farms and spa breaks are another way
to treat yourself to some relaxation. Here, you
can enjoy a whole host of beauty treatments,
from manicures and pedicures to boost your
confidence, to facials and full body massages
that’s will give you a new lease of life, some
time at a health farm or spa will do you the
world of good.
If you really want to escape the hustle and
bustle of your daily life, why not escape to the
country and stay in a quaint country cottage
or one of the many modern barn conversions
that are springing up across the UK. These
amazing places allow you to enjoy the peace,
tranquillity and stillness, whilst getting some
fresh air into your lungs.
If this sounds appealing but you’re not keen
on the idea of being miles from civilisation,
a holiday on a working farm might be the
solution. Here you can enjoy the with fresh
air and fine views, but also enjoy some of
the farm’s delicious and healthy produce,
especially if you stay in a farmhouse
guesthouse – nothing sounds better than fresh
eggs, and farm-reared bacon and sausages
for breakfast!
If your budget is tight, Aspire would like to
suggest making the most of what money you
do have. Instead of making your money stretch
to allow you two weeks away, why not opt for
10 days, or even one week. Although shorter,
this holiday time will be well spent in luxury,
rather than average accommodation, ensuring
you return home, relaxed and distressed, ready
to face the world again (until the next break at
Christmas).
If the recession has hit you extremely hard and
you can only afford a week away, again, why
not cut this down to a long weekend in the lap
of luxury, surrounded by spectacular British
scenery – the four days or so will leave you as
refreshed, if not more so, than if you tried to
make your money stretch further.
Aspire would like to recommend a trip to the
Channel Islands, a small cluster of islands
that lie in the English Channel, just off the
coast of France. These Islands have tempos
and characters’ all of their own, but with
cottage has been in the safe hands of Sally Tarlton, who took
over the running of the property from her late mother. Sally
told Aspire: “My parents opened the cottage up as holiday
accommodation in the early 1980’s, but it was left to me in
my mum’s will. I’ve done a few things to the cottage each year
since, gradually updating and redecorating it. It really is a lovely,
picturesque place to be, so much so that many guests return year
after year.”
With two bedrooms (one double with sea-view and one with
bunk-beds and single), a large family bathroom, a lounge that
boasts spectacular views of the sea, a dining room with new
furniture, and a fully-equipped kitchen with dishwasher and
washing machine for those long stays, it’s not hard to see why so
many people chose Curlew Cottage.
If you want somewhere to sit back and relax this summer, the
long, shared garden at Curlew Cottage is perfect; from here, you
can even take a five minute stroll into the village, where you’ll
find two pubs and a restaurant, including the award-winning
Lifeboat Inn.
Open all year round, a stay at Curlew Cottage won’t break the
bank; prices start from £50 per night in the low-season, whilst
a week-long stay can cost from £280 to £400 depending on the
season. Children of all ages are welcome, but regrettably, pets
and smokers are not.
Buckingham’s B&B
73 Station Road
Branston
Lincoln
LN4 1LG
Are you one of the many Brits looking to holiday at home this
year If so, a break in Lincolnshire offers many opportunities
to discover what’s great about the British countryside, as
well as the history surrounding the city of Lincoln. Whether
you’re looking for a week’s holiday or just a weekend break,
Buckingham’s Bed and Breakfast offers a comfy, welcoming
place to stay, and is great value for money.
Situated in the quiet village of Branston, this B&B is ideally
located to soak up all the sights of Lincolnshire, and provides
a great base from which to explore the entire county.
Established as a holiday accommodation in 1998, this bed
and breakfast has two rooms available for guests. The first is
a double room, complete with en-suite bathroom, whilst the
second is a twin room, with its own private bathroom, and
both are beautifully decorated and offer a snug and homely
place to relax and unwind. The village location means you’re
free from noisy traffic, guaranteeing a good nights sleep, and
leaving you refreshed and energised to get out and enjoy the
wonders of the county. Towels, linen and toiletries are also
provided.
Guests will be treated to a hearty, freshly cooked full
English breakfast, made from locally produced and organic
ingredients. If you prefer a lighter breakfast, toast and
cereals are also available. The secluded garden to the back
of the property provides a pretty area to sit out and enjoy
the sunshine and the tranquillity of Branston. Arrival and
departure times are flexible, depending on the guests needs,
and keys are provided upon request, allowing you to come
and go as you please.
Buckingham’s B&B welcomes children over the age of five.
However, if you would like accommodation for a baby, guests
must provide their own travel cot, although there is no extra
charge. Pets are also welcome, provided guests care and
provide for their animal themselves.
With so much to see and do in the vast and varied county
of Lincolnshire, you might be wondering where to start.
Just three miles from Branston sits Lincoln, the second most
visited city in Britain, outside of London. This magnificent
city is steeped in history and culture, and its cathedral and
castle both come highly recommended for a day out. Lincoln
Cathedral is also home to one of only four surviving copies
of the Magna Carta, one of the most important documents
of our history, and should be at the top of anyone’s list
of places to visit. There are also many shops to browse,
including fashion boutiques, specialist bookshops and high
street stores, and historic cruise tours, running through the
waterways of the city, are also a perfect way to see the sights.
For a more active way to spend the day, there are local
stables near to Branston for a spot of horse riding, and also
the new Water Rail Way, which provides a beautiful riverside
walk along the picturesque Lincolnshire countryside. There
are also many stately homes to visit, with magnificent gardens
to enjoy.
Why not head to the coast for some seaside fun. Just an
hour’s drive will take you to Skegness, and with its beach,
amusement arcades and Natureland Seal Sanctuary, you’ll
find your day is lively and entertaining. The Fantasy Island
funfair at nearby Ingoldmell’s is also great fun for kids.
If you’re hungry after a busy day exploring Lincolnshire,
the nearby pub is the ideal place to head for a tasty, hot
evening meal, before heading back to Buckingham’s Bed and
Breakfast for a great night’s sleep.
Quest For The Best
Be The Best
In The Business
It doesn’t mater whether your business is
a small, regional outfit, a single-person
home-based company or a nationwide
organisation, the road to success is the
same. The credit crunch has hit everyone
hard, so you need to make sure you’re
taking the right steps in order to survive.
Reputation is the key to running a good
business and is vital to its success. It is
important to ensure you can provide your
customers with the best quality and service,
as well as good value. In times of financial
hardship, most customers look only for
the cheapest option, so it is vital you offer
a competitive price. If you’re unable to
push prices down, then service is the best
way to ensure a good reputation; making
sure your staff are customer friendly costs
nothing at all. Many people buy goods from
recommended companies, whether that be
through family members and friends, or just
through word-of-mouth, so you need to
guarantee your staff will make a good and
lasting impression. After all, everyone wants
to be known as the best in the business.
With so many businesses having gone in
to administration in the past weeks and
months, it can be hard for customers to
know who to trust with their hard earned
Business At Weston Hall Hotel
Weston Hall Hotel Conference & Banqueting Centre
is a stunning 16th Century, Grade II listed, three-star
business meetings, staff training and conferences.
Surrounded by tranquil, rural settings, yet just
years, regularly hosting conferences, corporate
cash. When every penny counts, it can also
be difficult to judge where to go to find
products and services which offer good
value for money. Advertising and marketing
are useful ways of upping your profile to
those you can’t reach by word-of-mouth.
However, you need to make sure you tailor
your advertising towards the right people
and your intended target audience. Ensure
you know where your advertising is going to
attract the maximum number of customers.
Here at Aspire, we know how difficult it can
be to find well-established companies that
can offer good quality products and a high
level of service, so we work hard to tailor
our advertising to our readership.
The credit crunch has affected everyone
differently and many employees may be
feeling a little low and lacking in motivation.
Whether they’re worried about potential
job losses or trying to stretch their income
further than it will go, sometimes it’s best to
give their morale a boost with a corporate
activity day. You can encourage them to put
in extra effort, focus better and even gain
more loyalty by organising a day of team
bonding. There are plenty of activities to
choose from, including paint balling, gokarting,
white water rafting, bowling, clay
pigeon shooting, spa days or casino nights.
Steaming Ahead, Despite The Recession:
David Page Engineering
Founded over ten years ago, and with the engineering
discipline that underpins their designs and production,
Page Engineering are THE specialists in Burrell Road
Locomotives. They consider that the Burrell Road
Locomotive, along with the Burrell Scenic Showman’s
Engine, represents the peak of design and function in the
field of traction engines.
Page Engineering is bucking the current market trends –
they recently moved into a new workshop. David told us
why he’s decided to move away from the place he’s spent
the last 10 years: “Firstly, my workshop space was split
over two sites, meaning production wasn’t as efficient as
it could be. Secondly, the workshop space has become
increasingly cramped over the last few months – I came
to the conclusion that we’d outgrown the Newcastle Emlyn
site so it was time to move. I found a brand new factory
unit at Llandysul Enterprise Park in Ceredigion, that’s
perfect and we’re settled in now after moving in at the end
of March – it was a big operation but we settled in quite
quickly.”
Only buying in the casting, every other aspect of the engine
is built by David: “We build every single piece and even
manufacture the gears. In addition to the individual parts,
we can supply fully assembled and finished units, like
wheels and boilers.”
Offering individually handcrafted, half size versions
of these classic engines (this is six-inch scale), Page
Engineering build to the highest standards and their
services are available across the UK.
David adds: “Customer care is important to us, and we
strive to offer a flexible and supportive service at all times.
I enjoy doing what I do and approach every new job with
the same enthusiasm I had twenty years ago!”
David not only specialises in steam engines, but he also
applies his skills to the restoration of steam engines, as
well as developing a complete single cylinder version of the
engine, which is cheaper and less work. A full
range of six-inch castings is available and they also offer:
• A fully certified boiler construction service
• A full wheel building and assembly service
• Full gear cutting service
• A high quality machining facility to fabricate your
personal requirements
Due to the rapidly changing cost of some of the materials
used, prices do vary. However, Page Engineering guarantee
the best service, with the quality reflected in the price.
To reward David and his team for all their hard work and,
in particular, their specialist services in regards to steam
locomotive engines, Aspire has named David as our
Businessman of the Year 2009.
David said: “Thank you Aspire – it’s so nice to know that
the hard work and extra effort of moving to larger, better
premises is worthwhile, not just for customers, but for the
reputation of the business. I am so pleased to be named
your businessman of the year, especially in these hard
economic times; it makes all the hard work worthwhile.
This certificate will definitely be joining my other Aspire
Certificates on the wall.”
As David said, this isn’t the only accolade he has received
from Aspire; last year he received both a Certificate
of Recognition for Quality and Service, as well as our
prestigious Lifetime Achievement Certificate in recognition
of all his hard work.
Sales Executive, Elaine Ellis, told us why she nominated
David for these particular, prestigious Certificates: “After
getting to know David, I was astounded to learn about
the different aspects of his business. Page Engineering
deals specifically with locomotive engines, and to offer
handcrafted versions of this complex machinery is
absolutely incredible!”
passion into a business
A Shining Star…
STAR
Consulting
Look out for issue 121
out on 3rd July 2009
People use care providers for many different
reasons and to meet many different needs; some
people need part-time care just to get over a
difficult patch while others may need care for their
entire lives. If you are a care provider looking to
recruit the services of an innovative, flexible, and
friendly training company, look no further than
STAR Consulting, winners of Aspire’s Certificate
of Recognition for Professional Training
Services...
Established five years ago, STAR Consulting provides tailormade
training for all health and social care sector organisations.
Founder and Director of STAR Consulting, Peter Clark, told
Aspire: “I established STAR Consulting after numerous changes
in social care legislation, towards personalisation and supported
living and away from registered care. I knew that lots of people
within the care industry would need training, or even re-training,
in these areas in order to comply with the new legislation, so
STAR Consulting was born.”
Located in Sheffield, STAR Consulting believe that every
delegate from every care setting has different training needs,
which is why many of their training solutions are specifically
designed for individuals; Peter and his colleagues provide
unrivalled training and consultancy in a number of areas,
including:
• Person-centred Planning - based around the principles of
inclusion and the social model of disability, it ensures the focus
person is central and in control
• Risk Assessments - the determination of quantitative or
qualitative value of risk in relation to a situation/recognised threat
• Health & Safety - useful information on day to day health and
safety challenges
• Food Hygiene - affecting all food businesses, Food Hygiene
legislation ensures healthy and safe food is served
• Dealing with various Disabilities - such as autistic spectrum
disorders, epilepsy, and bi-polar
• Communication
• Workforce Training Assessments
• Equality and Diversity
• And More…
Peter added: “We can do anything clients want us to do, whether
that be training in policies and procedures for supported living
of disabled people, or Annual Quality Assurance Assessment
(AQAA) Consultancy and Management Consultancy. Although
most of our clients are within Yorkshire, we are happy to travel
in order to cater to clients needs. Between the three of us, we
have worked in every element of learning disability services,
registered care, supported living, employment, day care and
hospital in-patient, so we have the relevant experience, and
qualifications, to get your care staff up to scratch.”
Peter and his colleagues are trained to the highest standards,
with Peter trained to NVQ level 5 and MCI level 2, as well
as having a CQSW and being a member of The Institute of
Leadership and Management, so you can rest assured that
your employees will be in safe and knowledgeable hands.
Using training consultants, like STAR Consulting, enables you
and your company to stay on top of your game. Technology and
medical advancements are changing constantly, so employing
the expertise of training consultants will enable you to train staff
as and when the industry changes, without having the expense
of training somebody who will then train everybody else – you
can train everyone you need to in one go and avoid unnecessary
costs i.e. days off, training, man hours etc.
Not only that, but the professional assistance and extra
knowledge of training consultants can push your business
forward and enable you to provide the best care and help
develop your care staff. It’s also handy to have an independent
view of your care business, in case there are areas in which
you can not only increase the quality of care you provide, but
also increase the financial aspects, as a care business is still
a business that needs to be profitable, especially during the
current economic downturn.
On receiving our Certificate of Recognition for Professional
Training Services, Peter said: “Thank you Aspire; this official
recognition means so much to us as not only do we have
the necessary qualifications, but we also boast on the job
experience. We pass on our knowledge in a practical way, from
actual experience, rather than in a theoretical way, from books.”
