Pembroke Elementary School Teacher Honored with Tree Planting All across the nation, classes celebrated Dr. Seuss birthday during the month of February with all kinds of tributes to the author. For one class in the Public Schools of Robeson County, the last week of February was especially difficult as their teacher died unexpectedly on Saturday. Syvetra Armstrong was a beloved third grade teacher at Pembroke Elementary School. On February 27th, Pembroke Elementary School Principal Tona Jacobs and Rita Locklear (Indian Education Director) read Dr. Seuss’s book The Lorax to Armstrong's class. The students were all dressed in the pajamas as the school celebrated with a different Seuss themed attire for each day this week. Written on the board behind the book readers was Mrs. Armstrong’s last instruction to her class. The students sat attentively listening to the Dr. Seuss book. The Lorax has strong environmental themes regarding deforestation and air and water pollution. After reading the book, Mrs. Syvetra's 3rd grade class planted a tree in her honor at the rear entrance of the school. Each student scooped up handfuls of dirt to put around the new sappling. The Red Maple was donated by Pembroke Hardware to the school. The young mother of four was laid to rest February 27th. PARKTON ELEMENTARY On March 5 th , 2013 Parkton’s 5 th Graders were visited by two of Fayetteville’s FireAntz members. They came to read to the grade level and answer questions. SPELLING GREAT! On March 7th, 2013 Conner Leach was announced the winner of Robeson County’s 2012-2013 Spelling Bee held at Pembroke Elementary. Parkton Bruins are proud of Conner, WAY TO GO Conner Leach! Pembroke Elementary On February 19th and 20th our fourth and fifth graders had a very special visitor. Mr. Jose Hernandez, Gang Detective for the Robeson County Sheriffs Department, came to speak with our students about the importance of being good students and choosing our friends wisely. Mr. Jose shared some his life experieces with our students and educated them about some things that they should be aware of that is going on in our area. Mr. Jose ended his message by showing our students a music video with these lyrics "I know I can, Be what i wanna be, if I work hard School at it, I'll be where I wanna be. A big thanks to Mr. Jose. You really inspired our students to be the best they can be! Pre-K has been busy learning alphabet, numbers, shapes and colors. We visited Lowe’s Food to learn about and taste various healthy foods. We had a great time at the UniverSoul circus. The children saw many animals, a magic show and acrobats. We celebrated Dr. Seuss’ birthday with different activities including A Cat in the Hat snack and guest readers. 17
