Piney Grove Elementary School
4th Grade had been really
busy the past few months. We
recently took a trip to Fort
Fisher. We had a wonderful
time looking at marine life.
When we left Fort Fisher, we
had a wonderful lunch at
Chuckee Cheese.
Now we are working hard
with Common Core. The
benchmark is coming in a few
weeks and we hope that all the
hard work pays off with high
scores. Our students have also
learned a lot about Black
History. Our school had two
programs this month and the
students learned from each of
them.
Our 5th grade team is
proud to announce Kaitlyn Wilt
as the District Award winner for
an essay contest. She then
moved on to win the chapter
level. Congrats Kaitlyn! For
Language Arts, students are
busy working on art projects,
creating carvings/ sculptures.
For math we are full of
enthusiasm for fractions with
models! Science is finishing up
food chains/ food webs along
with describing interactions of
various populations in
ecosystems. Our Social
Studies department is busy
working on their constitution
bug and learning more about
our nation’s rich history. We
recently took a trip to the crown
coliseum to watch “Freedom
Train” for Black History Month.
After our experience learning
more about Harriet Tubman
and the Underground Railroad,
we then enjoyed a nice lunch at
Grandson’s. Students are in
deep preparation for
improvement on the next
Discovery Benchmark tests.
Good Luck to everyone!
Finally, Congratulations to our
5th grade choir and band for
their performance during our
Black History Program and
PTO.
We were very
proud of our
students.
Next, our
school
celebrated
Read across
America and
Dr. Seuss with
a week of
activity. From
eating green
eggs and
ham, to
dressing
wacky,
students
Dr. Seuss CAT IN THE HAT
learned to associate reading
with fun! Lastly, on March 7,
we held our sixth BBs (Books
and Brownies) Social. Students
are striving to increase their
reading levels! We like to
welcome our Kindergarten
Pioneers!
Piney Grove’s science
club is working diligently on
another fundraiser to prepare
for their field trip to Marble’s
Science Museum in Raleigh,
NC. We have enjoyed working
together this year conducting
exciting and new experiments,
maintaining our compost bin,
taking a trip to Fascinate-U
museum, and dissecting owl
pellets. Students are becoming
more enthused about science
and are learning about the
physical world around us!
Piney Grove Beta Club
has some exciting news. We
are proud to say that we have
raised over a $1000 dollars for
Leukemia research for children
in North Carolina. We are also
going on a weekend trip to
Washington DC in March. We
plan to visit the White House
and the Capitol. It will be a life
learning experience for our 5th
and 6th graders.
The month of February has
been busy for Piney Grove's
Choir! All choir students are
working on the upcoming
spring concert, which will be
held in May. They will be
singing a variety of music that
ranges from the 70's to the
present. Fifth grade choir
performed at February's PTO
singing "Oh Won't You Sit
Down" with soloist Shayna
Tyler. Second grade did a
fantastic job at their
performance at the Black
History Program. They sang
"Oh Won't You Sit Down" and
"Nobody Knows the Trouble
I've Seen". Also at the Black
History Program, music
teacher Ms. Kelsey Cummings
performed "Maple Leaf
Rag" by Scott Joplin on the
piano. Everyone did an
AWESOME job!
The media center has
had a busy month so far! We
have had our spring
bookfair, BBs (Books and
Brownies) for AR and
celebrated Dr. Seuss! It has
been a great month for
