Saswati Chakraborty a correspondent from The
Economic Times, Bangalore, wanted to know whether
the new political and bureaucratic resolve for a better
trade and investment climate was being matched by a
real change in the mindset at the ground level. In other
words, whether a new work culture was discernible.
Deb and Sen, defending the West Bengal
Government, declared that all forms of investment
that would not have adverse impact on native trade
and industry and cause unemployment of the local
people was being welcomed. A new corridor on the
fast track linking major road arteries such as
Kolkata and Kalyani was being implemented.
Labour problems had been kept to the minimum
while investment in the field of agriculture and
higher education was particularly invited. The
State Government believed in spearheading necessary
reforms by outsourcing services and speeding
up the procedure for new enterprises. The tourism
policy that respected existing national obligations
was being implemented in the Sunderbans. Stateof-the-art
boats promoted by private companies
would soon be introduced in the region. !
