“Some use it as a ‘babysitter’ and others
as a way to escape from work and that’s not
right,” Smith said. “As long as you use it
properly, it’s not a problem.” Smith explains
that overall, the actual watching of television
is not as big of a problem as it may seem to
be.
“The time when it might be a problem
is when it becomes an obsession and when
it takes away from other work,” Smith said.
“It’s really just a form of entertainment.”
But Smith also explained that certain
television shows have a bad influence
on viewers, depending on just what type
of show it is. She said that after recently
reading an article, people might become too
knowledgeable.
“Criminals are becoming more savvy
in how to cover up their tracks because of
shows like “C.S.I.,” Smith said. “Shows like
“The O.C.,” give the misrepresentation that
it’s okay to have loose morals and I think
teenagers get the wrong idea from that.” But
she also explained that still some shows are
perfectly acceptable.
“Shows like “American Idol” are okay
because everyone is cheering on someone and
it’s like watching a sporting event, really,”
Smith said.
Nonetheless, people continue to watch all
of these shows.
“Some of my reasons [for watching TV]
are different than Katy’s,” Mrs. Herman
said. “Some [shows] make you think and
aren’t just for the entertainment value.” Bubp
agreed with Mrs. Herman.
“I watch them because I enjoy the subject
matter. I find them really interesting and I can
sometimes connect to what is happening,”
Bubp said. “If you really enjoy it and it’s
something that gets your blood pumping,
there is nothing wrong with it at all.”

Pakenham said that recording a lot of
shows isn’t a problem.
“I don’t have to watch as many shows
during the week because shows can wait
until I can watch them because you can only
manually erase everything so you can save as
much as you want,” she said.
Gill said she frequently used this feature
to record movies.
“I record movies from movie channels
because it’s a lot cheaper than renting
DVDs,” she said.
Sophomore Alex Huth said that cost was
another benefit of DVR.
“It was only $5 more with this deal from
Time Warner so it’s definitely been worth it,”
he said.
Gill said that her family purchased
DVR because they were getting new cable
services anyhow and there was no significant
additional cost to get DVR. She also said that
the system was very easy to use at first.
Huth said he agreed.
“The instructions are on the screen so it’s
pretty easy… my mom still doesn’t know
how to use it, though,” he said.
Paasch said his parents don’t know how
to use it, either.
“My sister and I use it all the time, but my
parents don’t really get it,” he said.
Vasquez said that he had to read the
directions, but after a while, he “got the hang
of it.”
Senior Ryan Kidder said he agreed.
“It’s not too difficult, and it’s worth it
because it’s so useful. There’s lots of stuff
you can do with DVR without the hassle of
VCRs,” he said.
Smith agrees. She said that, though many
people think it’s like a VCR, it actually has
many more benefits.
“If you catch a movie in the middle, it can
record that movie from the beginning,” she
said. However, she said she felt that VCRs
did have one good attribute that TiVo lacks.
“I wish there was a removable component
with TiVo because I record things that I
would like to take into my classes, but I
can’t because it only records shows in the
box,” she said.
Gill said she also sees opportunities for
improvement with TiVo and DVR.
“Someday, I hope they have the ability
to record shows based on your interests,”
she said. “That would be so neat.”

‘The OC’ and ‘Laguna Beach’ forget that
there are other places like North Canton all
over the country. The people who live in
Orange County aren’t real. At least, I don’t
remember the last time my parents gave me
$1000 to go blow on whatever I wanted,”
she said.
“We are the next generation and a lot of
teens don’t realize this. If we are to become
good leaders, we need to educate ourselves
so we won’t repeat the mistakes that we
made in the past,” Esber said.
