Among the elite Logan Wern Staff Writer Dynasty is an understatement when talking about the girls basketball team. With three Elite Eight appearances since 2002, including one state title, the Lady Vikes are among the state’s finest. This season was set up to be a defining year for the program, and the team did not fail. After starting the season with two losses to national powerhouses, the team won 21 straight games, earning a fifth-place ranking in the last Associated Press state poll. Additionally, senior Amber Witt and sophomore Brittany Orban had stellar individual seasons. Witt broke the 1,000-point mark for career points, and Orban broke the single- season scoring record. Unfortunately, their season came to a screeching halt March 10 in the regional final game against Wadsworth to end the season with a record of 22-3. Witt said Hoover’s hopes were high before the game against Wadsworth. “We went into the game thinking we could win it,” Witt said. “They were on fire the whole game. They did not miss a shot. Sometimes teams get on a roll and that is what happened [against Wadsworth].” Witt said her only regret this season is the regional final game. “I wouldn’t change a single thing [about the season]. My senior year of basketball t u r n e d o u t really well. I might change MS. PAM MCCARTHY losing the regional final game. Otherwise, everything went really well,” Witt said. Junior Giavana DiPietro agreed. “I wish we could go back to that regional final game and replay it,” DiPietro said, “We could have all done better. That would be the only thing I would change.” Wadsworth beat the Vikings by 22 points. The final score was 71-49. “[Wadsworth] played extremely well,” head coach Paul Wackerly said. “There’s not much you can do about that.” Although the season ended sooner than the girls wanted, Witt said she is happy with their season overall. “You’re never satisfied with a season where you’re not the winner in the end,” Witt said. “It’s not fully satisfying, but I’m happy we got as far as we did.” Witt said she was proud of winning the district championship. “Last year we weren’t able to do that,” Witt said. “It was a great achievement for me as a senior to reach that goal.” Senior Michelle Maitert agreed and said that the girls “accomplished so much.” She said she designates an early season win against state powerhouse, Cincinnati Mount Notre Dame, who was ranked best in the state at the time, as the team’s breakout game. “One of my favorite moments was when we beat Mount Notre Dame at Berlin Highland,” Maitert said. “I think we really came together. Our game turned around and we started playing better. It was so exciting.” Wackerly said he was proud of the Mount Notre Dame win, the district championship, the federal league championship, getting to regional finals, but most of all, “being able to coach the kids he had.” “Every kid got better–even the kids that didn’t get to play as much,” Wackerly said. “Their attitudes were positive, and they played as a group.” Maitert said she also recognizes the selfless attitude of the team. “We played as a team. We weren’t selfish. We shared the ball,” Maitert said. “We worked both offense and defense. We each carried out our responsibilities. We played team basketball.” Wackerly said he feels that this “team basketball” and the girls’ success were made possible by the girls’ close friendships. “These girls are best friends. This is a very close group of girls, which is probably why they did so well,” Wackerly said. Wackerly also attributes their success to other factors. “Their work ethic was good. They came to practice and worked hard every day. They were easy to coach,” he said. Wackerly said he commends the girls for their season. “I’m very proud of them. I have no bad feelings [about the season]. We accomplished a lot. Being in the Elite Eight was great. STEFFANY BAGNOLO sports briefs • The winter sports season has come to an end with Hoover teams fairing well in the Federal League and tournaments. • The girls swimming and diving team finished tied with Jackson on top of the Federal League and had two relays and two individuals compete at the State meet. Junior diver Jacquie Paumier also competed at the state meet finishing 11 th in the diving competition. M a k i n g f i r s t - team for the girls was seniors Emily Misanik and Mary Schopper, juniors Sarah Tharp and Paumier and freshman Mandi Grandjean and Rachel Misanik. • On the boy’s side of the pool there was a three way tie at the top of the Federal League between Hoover, GlenOak and Boardman. The Lady Vikes then went on to beat McKinley for the third time this year and advanced to the Regionals for the fourth time in five years. They lost to Wadsworth in the finals. Before the finals senior Amber Witt surpassed the 1,000 point mark for her career and sophomore Brittany Orban set the single season scoring record in an impressive win over Cleveland JFK. Junior Barry Shetzer represented the boys team, making second-team All Federal League. Their final record was 13-8. • Clay Benko (left), Devon Sanderson, and Kenny Moore represented the Hoover wrestling team in the District tournament but didn’t qualify for the State tournament. • The Hoover softball staff and players will host a softball clinic for girls grades 3-8 from 1-4 p.m. Sunday, in the Hoover High School gymnasium. Cost of the clinic will be $25. Registrations forms may be picked up at the Hoover High School Athletic Office, North Canton Middle School, all North Canton elementary schools, and the North Canton YMCA.
