‘CAUSE IT FEELS SO EMPTY WITHOUT ME
Where is the Hoover Company going
François de la Rochefoucauld, a French
author once said, “The only thing constant
in life is change.” He was absolutely right.
Not to sound too pessimistic, but in the
reality of 2006, there’s a chance that even
Hell could freeze over any day now.
So it comes as no surprise that after 98
years of innovative vacuum production in
North Canton, Ohio, The Hoover Company
could be waving goodbye to its hometown
for good as early as 2008 when union
contracts expire.
For most people here, that would be
sad, indeed. After all, what would the
city that lies in what will eventually be
called Hoover Township do with a Hoover
Historical Society, a Hoover High School
and a Hoover Park with no Hoover Company
to complement the rich history of the city
I would personally find it embarrassing
and depressing, especially if a big, empty
brick factory stared down residents of our
quaint little city every day as a reminder of
our loss.
To make sure this scenario doesn’t
happen, several entities are fighting to keep
Ashley Kline
Pro-life supporters
won a huge victory for
their stance as South
Dakota Governor Mike
Rounds signed an antiabortion
act into law.
The law bans abortions
in all instances except when the mother’s life
is in danger.
The law becomes even more threatening,
and unbelievable, as it denies abortions for
women who are victims of rape or incest,
according to MSNBC.com.
Proponents of the law claim that the men
who are responsible for raping a woman still
have rights to their child. How reassuring it is
to know that South Dakota state legislatures
are putting the rights of rapists before
the women who have suffered from their
criminal acts.
The motive for the enactment of this
ban is to attempt to gain attention from the
the Hoover Company from falling apart.
Spearheading this campaign on the local
front is City Councilman and president of
union Local 1985, James Repace. In his
quest to keep Hoover alive, he is looking into
the idea for employees to bite the bullet and
personally invest in the company to revitalize
it and bring ownership back to where The
Hoover Company began – North Canton.
This proposal is bold in an ever-increasing
global marketplace where most major
companies are no longer independent of
one another, but conglomerates of many
smaller companies. Repace wants the pride
of a domestic company to stay in America
– not in the hands of a foreign company that
has no appreciation for the vacuum legend
save for its recognizable name.
The other major option for The Hoover
Company is to be devoured by Whirlpool,
the world’s largest appliance manufacturer.
This option promotes more stability for the
company, but it also can spell the downfall to
the North Canton operation as we know it.
According to their website, Whirlpool
has 15 plants between Canada and Mexico,
Jacob Brown
LIVIN’ OUT LOUD
Could Ohio be the next South Dakota
Supreme Court in hopes of overturning Roe
v. Wade, which legalized abortion.
With the addition of new Supreme Court
justices John Roberts and Samuel Alito, the
court has swayed towards the conservative
side. The possibility of overturning Roe v.
Wade could become very plausible if the
case makes it to the Supreme Court.
According to MSNBC, South Dakota
Senator Republican John Thune claims that
the law is neither extreme nor radical, and
that South Dakota is a pro-life state.
I find it hard to believe that Thune could
make such a statement as if he speaks for the
whole state of South Dakota. I’m assuming
that not every person in South Dakota voted
him into the Senate, so I’m sure there are
some dissenting opinions.
Personally, I think the thought of all of
these well-aged, power-hungry men making
decisions on what a woman may or may not
do with her body is quite absurd. Until a baby
four of which are in
Ohio. Sure, that shows
that this company is
dedicated to keeping
plants in the Midwest,
but all of these plants
are much newer and
more sophisticated than our factory. In
order to bring it up to spec, Whirlpool might
have to revamp the whole North Canton
factory, which could prove to be financially
unviable.
It’s all a big gamble. Is it more worthwhile
to let a huge corporation absorb our
legendary company and leave its future in
North Canton up to chance, or would it be
better to put faith in a modern hero to lead
the company’s operations back to where it
all began
Our community takes pride in this
company not just because of its success, but
also because of its willingness to give back
to the community that nurtured it. Now, it’s
our turn. We can either let whatever happens
happen, or we can give back to the company
that has given so much to us.
is born, it is only the woman’s responsibility
to decide what is right or wrong. No one else
has such authority.
Also, the majority of women who have
abortions are not usually involved in loving,
stable relationships, or do not have the
necessary means to properly care for a baby
through the pregnancy or after the baby is
born, according to Planned Parenthood.
South Dakota extremists are not stopping
at the ban’s approval. Representatives are
encouraging affiliates in Washington D.C.
to pass similar legislation in their respective
states, including Ohio, according to WKYC.
With this new legislation, what will
happen to the women who feel abortion is
their only option Are we going to return
to the days of illegal, back-alley abortions
Making abortion illegal will not make it go
away. However, with this new legislation in
South Dakota, women’s rights will surely
begin to diminish.
