5. Special Session: Human Rights Education through the Arts

In the special session Mr. Babu Ayindo,
facilitated the session entitled Arts
Approaches to Peace Building and
Conflict Transformation . Mr. Ayindo is
the Coordinator of Ubuntu Arts in Kenya
who uses drama to teach reconciliation
and trauma healing.
He divided his presentation into five
parts. First, the introduction part which
include preliminary comments on the goal
of the session and overview of process.
Next, the art of being human which
include introductory exercises that warm
up the body and voice while engaging
imagination on issues of spontaneity,
power, diversity, essential theaterand
the right to self-expression that formal
schooling seems to stifle. Third,
constructing a new narrative of human
rights which is an open-ended indigenous
storytelling performance by the facilitator
raising questions on human rights,
education and dialogue followed by an
interactive attempt to complete the story in
groups. Fourth, DVD clip from Amandla
(South African Musicals) which is the
video excerpt that captures the role of
music and dance in the struggle against
apartheid in South Africa. Lastly, he gave
the concluding remarks on the review on
how artful pedagogies could be applied
in human rights education, reclaiming the
senses and community mobilization given
the diverse contexts. (please refer to page
