Advancement
by Angie Pieper Gray ‘83
Director of Development and Marketing
When I think of the Badin family, I
envision a large oak tree in fertile
ground. The Badin root system is
plentiful, strong and well fertilized.
The trunk is sturdy and ever growing.
The limbs and leaves are abundant
and bountiful. Through sunshine,
storms, droughts, snow & ice, the oak
tree continues to grow and bend to
adapt to its ever changing environment.
The root system continues to
flourish and the above ground portion
grows new leaves and sheds them every year, further fertilizing the
ground it stands in.
According to the Colorado State University web page on ‘Healthy Roots
and Healthy Trees’: “…The root system of a tree performs many vital
functions. In winter, it is a store-house for essential food reserves needed
by the tree to produce spring foliage. Roots absorb and transport water
and minerals from the soil to the rest of the tree. Roots also anchor the
portion of the tree above ground. It is important to keep the portion
above ground healthy to ensure an adequate food supply for the roots to
continue their important functions…”
As I read the information for healthy trees and roots, I am reminded how
important both the root system and the above ground portion are and
how they must work together to provide an overall healthy tree; and that
proves true for the Badin family. The root system represents our alumni
from Badin, Hamilton Catholic, and Notre Dame High Schools; the above
portion of the tree our current school family.
Our tree is producing bountiful students who are service-minded and
well prepared for college and the world beyond our walls. Our Badin
tree also has a strong and plentiful root system that has withstood the
past recession and continued to support Badin High School as we have
weathered the poor economy. We often hear of alumni successes –
acceptances into prestigious programs, running successful businesses,
being honored by their community for their service, earning post-graduate
degrees, teaching at Badin or other schools, working as doctors, nurses,
firefighters, police officers and more. Our alumni continue to change
the world for the better in so many ways, too many to count, and we are
proud.
