Pre-AP Training for Middle and High<br />

School Teachers - Race to the Top<br />

Project 4D<br />

As part <strong>of</strong> the Race to the Top<br />

grant, Whitin Middle School is<br />

participating in the Pre-AP initiative to<br />

increase the number <strong>of</strong> students<br />

prepared to participate in and succeed in<br />

mathematics, science, and English<br />

Advanced Placement courses. Years<br />

one, two and three <strong>of</strong> the grant will focus<br />

on science and years two, three and four<br />

<strong>of</strong> the grant will focus on either<br />

mathematics or English. This grant will<br />

provide teachers with high quality<br />

pr<strong>of</strong>essional development designed to<br />

assist them in developing curricula,<br />

instruction and performance and<br />

performance expectations that prepare<br />

students for AP coursework. It also<br />

provides an opportunity for teachers to<br />

collaborate in horizontal and vertical<br />

teams and network with other teachers in<br />

their region for the purpose <strong>of</strong> improving<br />

curriculum and instruction.<br />

Extracurricular Activities<br />

Whitin Middle School <strong>of</strong>fers an<br />

extensive program <strong>of</strong> extracurricular<br />

clubs, after-school intramural activities,<br />

and athletic teams for all students in<br />

grades 5-8. The extracurricular program<br />

Community <strong>of</strong> Caring Program<br />

Community <strong>of</strong> Caring is a school<br />

wide program built around five core values<br />

that empower young people to be<br />

responsible and caring members <strong>of</strong> a<br />

c o m m u n i t y : C a r i n g , R e s p e c t ,<br />

Responsibility, Trust, and Family. These<br />

five values serve as a foundation and<br />

umbrella for Whitin activities and<br />

initiatives. Nadine Clifford and Michelle<br />

Chastenay-Simpson are Co-chairs <strong>of</strong> this<br />

Committee. Activities planned by the<br />

Community <strong>of</strong> Caring were: Collecting<br />

Winter Coats, Recycling, Earth Day<br />

Activities, Family Bingo Night, Action<br />

Packed Activity Night, and a Family<br />

Painting Night.<br />

Whitin Middle School PTO<br />

The PTO works to provide support<br />

for school events and activities that would<br />

not be possible under the current school<br />

budget. The PTO makes positive<br />

contributions to the school environment by<br />

sponsoring a number <strong>of</strong> enrichment<br />

activities both inside and outside <strong>of</strong> the<br />

classroom.<br />

Existing Programs<br />

Whitin Middle School, with an<br />

enrollment <strong>of</strong> 650 students in grades 5-8,<br />

was selected as a “NELMS Spotlight<br />

School” in March 2004. Whitin Middle<br />

School was honored again with this award<br />

in 2007. Worcester Magazine (August<br />

2004) featured Whitin “as a Middle School<br />

that is frequently recognized, although the<br />

community has a low per-pupil<br />

expenditure.” The School’s trademark is a<br />

positive environment and culture and a<br />

strong spirit <strong>of</strong> staff collegiality.<br />
