Shenhua Group embraces coal technology
China Shenhua Group

technology to
embrace ‘clean’ coal
and energy practices.

AS WELL as increasing coal production to
maintain its ranking as China’s largest producer,
China Shenhua Group is implementing cutting
edge technology to embrace ‘clean’ coal and
energy practices. Among the new coal technologies
Shenhua is implementing are coal bed
gas, coal to liquids (CTL) and chemicals, and
the production of alumina from coal ash.
Coal to liquids and chemicals is a new
growth engine. The success of Shenhua
Ordos’ direct coal liquefaction project,
Shenhua Baotou’s MTO project and Shenhua
Ningxia Coal’s MTP project have enabled
China to become a leader in coal
chemical technologies.
The Shenhua Ordos CTL and Chemical
Branch of China Shenhua CTL and Chemical
Company Ltd are primarily involved in demonstration
production of direct coal liquefaction
and indirect coal liquefaction. The Shenhua Direct
Coal Liquefaction Project applies direct
coal liquefaction technologies with independent
intellectual property rights. The construction
program aims at a final annual oil
throughput of 5 million tonnes and is divided
into two phases, with the first phase consisting
of three production lines, including 14 sets of
main production plants for coal liquefaction,
coal hydrogen making, etc. After completion
and operation, with an annual coal consumption
of 9.7 million tonnes, 3.2 million tonnes of
oil products of various types will be produced,
including 2.15 million tonnes of diesel oil and
310,000 tonnes of liquefied gas.
China’s state news agency Xinhua has recently
reported that Shenhua Group has
started building a $21.4 billion facility to produce
alumina from coal ash. Xinhua quoted
Shenhua’s deputy manager Ling Wen as saying
the company plans to invest 135.8 billion
Yuan (US$21.4 billion) in the project, near Jungar
coal mine at Ordos city, Inner Mongolia.
Xinhua stated the project would include a
6600MW power plant, an alumina plant and a
gallium plant, all of which will use materials recycled
from coal burning. Ordos, which is
home to one-sixth of China’s coal reserves, will
be able to produce 3 billion tonnes of alumina.
Meanwhile, Shenhua Group subsidiary,
Shenhua Shendong Coal Group Corporation,
produced 202 million tonnes of commercial
coal in 2011, becoming the first 200
million tonne commercial coal production
base in China, while raw coal output
reached 219 million tonnes in 2011, up
nearly 11.2 million tonnes from the previous
year. The same field became China’s first
100 million coal production in 2005.
Shendong coalfield covers a large area partly
in northern Yulin in Shaanxi Province and partly
in southern Ordos in Inner Mongolia. It has
223.6 billion tonnes of proven coal reserves.

间 接 液 化 示 范 生 产 。 神 华 直 接 液 化 煤 制 油 项
目 采 用 具 有 自 主 知 识 产 权 的 煤 直 接 液 化 技
术 。 总 建 设 规 划 为 年 产 油 品 500 万 吨 , 分 两
期 建 设 , 其 中 一 期 工 程 有 三 条 主 生 产 线 组
成 , 包 括 煤 液 化 、 煤 制 氢 等 14 套 主 要 生 产
装 置 。 建 成 投 产 后 , 每 年 用 煤 量 970 万 吨 ,
可 生 产 各 种 油 品 320 万 吨 , 其 中 柴 油 215 万
吨 、 液 化 气 31 万 吨 。
据 中 国 国 家 通 讯 社 新 华 社 最 近 报 道 , 神 华
集 团 已 经 开 始 建 造 一 个 价 值 214 亿 美 元 的 设
施 , 用 来 从 粉 煤 灰 中 提 取 氧 化 铝 。 新 华 社 引
用 了 神 华 集 团 副 总 经 理 凌 文 的 讲 话 , 他 称 ,
公 司 将 对 这 个 位 于 内 蒙 古 鄂 尔 多 斯 市 准 格 尔
煤 矿 附 近 的 项 目 投 资 1358 万 元 人 民 币 (214
亿 美 元 )。
新 华 社 称 该 项 目 包 括 一 座 总 装 机 容 量 为
6600 兆 瓦 发 电 厂 、 一 座 铝 加 工 厂 和 一 座 镓
加 工 厂 的 建 设 , 这 些 厂 房 都 将 使 用 燃 煤 回 收

团 公 司 在 2011 年 产 出 2.02 亿 吨 商 品 煤 , 成
为 中 国 首 个 2 亿 吨 商 品 煤 生 产 基 地 , 同 时 ,
2011 年 的 原 煤 产 量 达 2.19 亿 吨 , 同 比 增 长
1120 万 吨 。 同 样 的 领 域 在 2005 年 建 成 了 中
国 第 一 个 亿 吨 级 煤 炭 生 产 基 地 。
神 东 煤 田 占 地 广 阔 , 覆 盖 了 陕 西 省 榆 林 北
部 和 内 蒙 古 鄂 尔 多 斯 南 部 的 部 分 区 域 。 已 证
实 煤 炭 储 量 达 2236 亿 吨 。
