Production imminent from Jiangsu plant
GALAXY Resources expects to achieve first
production at the Jiangsu Lithium Carbonate
Project in Jiangsu Province by the end of
March. Mechanical completion of the plant
was completed in December with the commissioning
process being undertaken during
the current quarter.
After receiving construction completion certificates
for all areas of the plant from EPCM
contractor Hatch Engineering, Galaxy began
the cold commissioning process which involves
ensuring the integrity of plant, equipment, electrical,
instrumentation and control systems.
Galaxy’s managing director Iggy Tan said
this process had been progressing well without
any major defect issues being identified.
It was expected to be completed in mid-February.
“Some areas of the plant like micronizing
and packaging have progressed to hot
commissioning and operation. The company
is very satisfied with the progress to date and,
if no major defects are identified, we expect
the plant to be well into hot commissioning
by late February and the first lithium carbonate
produced by the end of the quarter.
“Our operations team continues to be fully
involved in all stages of commissioning activities
to ensure a smooth transfer from the commissioning
to the operations phase,” he said.
The plant fire protection system has been
inspected and accepted by a third-party and
local government. An environment system
completion report was submitted to the
Jiangsu Provincial Government, with an onsite
inspection scheduled, and this is expected
to lead to final production and start
up approvals. During February the kilns, with

plant were to be commissioned with this involving
the final dry out and firing of both the
calciner and the sulphation kiln.
Galaxy says the spodumene unloading system
at the Two Lions wharf, overland conveyor
and ore storage area have been fully commissioned,
with trial shipments being successfully
unloaded. A 31,000 tonne spodumene shipment
from Galaxy’s Mt Cattlin mine in Western
Australia was successfully unloaded and conveyed
to the plant ore storage area.
At Mt Cattlin Galaxy mines lithium pegmatite
ore and processes it on site to produce
a spodumene concentrate and
tantalum by-product. At full capacity, Galaxy
will annually produce 137,000 tonnes of spodumene
concentrate and 56,000 pounds of
contained tantalum. The concentrate is
shipped to the Jiangsu plant which is expected
to annually produce 17,000 tonnes of
battery grade lithium carbonate.
Galaxy also has a farm-in agreement with
Lithium One to acquire up to 70% of the
James Bay Lithium Pegmatite Project in Quebec,
Canada, while it is also advancing plans
for a lithium-ion battery plant, to produce
350,000 battery packs annually for the electric
bike market.
