There are 17 national programmes, nationella program*,<br />

that include all three classes. The national programmes<br />

provide a broad-based general education and lead to eligibility,<br />

behörighet*, to study at a university or other institution<br />

of higher learning. Certain core subjects, kärnämnen,<br />

are included in all programmes. These are Swedish,<br />

English, mathematics, sports and health, social studies, religion,<br />

natural history and aesthetics. In addition to the core<br />

subjects, every programme includes required subjects, subjects<br />

specific to the particular programme, karaktärsämnen,<br />

and student electives, elevens individuella val, subjects that<br />

students may sometimes choose themselves.<br />

To start a national programme, a student must receive<br />

passing marks in Swedish, English and mathematics.<br />

The national programmes, in alphabetical order, are:<br />

• Arts programme<br />

• Business and administration<br />

programme<br />

• Child and recreation<br />

programme<br />

• Construction programme<br />

• Electrical engineering<br />

programme<br />

• Energy programme<br />

• Food programme<br />

• Handicraft programme<br />

• Healthcare programme<br />

• Hotel, restaurant and catering<br />

programme<br />

• Industry programme<br />

• Media programme<br />

• Natural science programme<br />

• Social science programme<br />

• Technical programme<br />

• Vehicle engineering<br />

programme<br />

Most national programmes have national guidelines,<br />

nationella inriktningar, meaning they are essentially the same<br />

nation-wide.<br />

Upper-secondary schools offer a range of courses, kurser,<br />

each of which provides a certain number of points, poäng.<br />

For every course, there should be a syllabus, kursplan,<br />

explaining its purpose and objectives.<br />
