students blaze
path during
Fun Run

Friday 600 runners from
kindergarten to fourth grade
at Rann Elementary put on
their running shoes to blaze
a trail at the school’s Fun
Run.
The popular spring event
and its fall equivalent, have
helped pave a path to backto-back
state titles for several
of the members of the
Decatur Lady Eagles cross
country team.
It has also provided a day
of fun and achievement for
students, who were joined
by family members to run
either the half-mile or threequarters-mile
course near
the school.
“It’s crazy,” said Rann
physical education teacher
Kasi Elder. “There are those
that love it and those that
don’t like running and it
doesn’t come easy for them.
But they give it their all.
Every year, I’m almost in
tears because I know how
far they’ve come.”
The Fun Run started as
part of the President’s Physical
Fitness Test, now mandated
by the state.
For the first run, students
ran a mile. But Elder said
the distance was shortened
because of the challenging
course.
Now, the kindergarten
students run approximately
a quarter of a mile. The first
graders run a half mile. Students
in grades two through
four have the choice of running
or walking a half mile
or the longest distance.
The older students wear
tags as they would during
a 5K or other road race to
make it more authentic. All
participants received a T-
shirt this year.

make it a lifetime activity.
“We talk a lot about lifelong
fitness and even as they
get older that they should
be able to walk a half mile,”
Elder said. “It’s a hard sport
to get fired up for and to get
motivated to train. We try to
make it fun.”
In the weeks leading up to
the run, the kids train and
show improvement each
day.
From the first grade on,
medals are given to the top
boys’ and girls’ finishers
from each race in each category.
But Elder said an extra
five make it to the school’s
honor wall, which is a goal
for several of the students.
“Some of the older kids get
competitive,” Elder said. “We

EARLY GENDER
DETERMINATION
When parents want to know the gender of their unborn child, they
usually rely on a second-trimester ultrasound. Yet, it is sometimes
in the best interests of an expectant couple and their unborn child
to determine fetal sex earlier. For instance, the inherited medical
condition known as “congenital adrenal hyperplasia” (CAH) causes
girls to develop external genitalia and male-like characteristics.
However, this disorder can be treated with dexamethasone (a steroid)
as early as the condition is diagnosed, which makes early gender
determination highly desirable. Fortunately, it is possible to conduct a
blood test as early as the seventh week of pregnancy to determine the
baby’s sex. This accurate test involves looking for two genes on the Y
sex chromosome.

Dear Neil: I have several iris plants
hat were my husband’s grandmother’s
plants. Only one or two plants out of 20
bloom each year. I have them planted in
a sunny location, and I do not overwater
them. Is there anything I can do to encourage
better bloom
I need a few more details. However,
let’s speak in ideals, so that you can
compare the care you’ve given it to the
benchmarks. Iris need full sun to grow
and bloom to their best potential. Work
several inches of organic matter into
their planting beds before you set the
transplants in place. Keep them moist
at all times, and use a high-nitrogen, or
perhaps even an all-nitrogen plant food
for best growth. Those are the keys to
success, and somewhere in there is the
answer to your issues. They bloom best
the second spring after they’ve been
transplanted, so perhaps you’ve not given
them enough time.

Alvord Meals Ministry delivers the good stuff

Her mother-in-law,
Velma Parson, spoons fruit

This is a daily routine in
ome and church kitchens

In the past, volunteers
picked up meals from a local
cafe. The cost of the food
added up, and the Methodist
Church decided to make
their own meals in 2004.
First Baptist Church followed
suit in October.
Each church has a different
rotation. Sue West
and other volunteers with
the Methodist Church cook
and deliver about once a
week. At the First Baptist
Church, volunteers are on
a monthly rotation.
West has been involved
with the ministry since its
inception, and she and her
husband cook and deliver
every Thursday.
“My husband drives, and
I jump out and take it in,”
she said. “We cook whatever
is on sale. We have a
meat, at least two vegetables
and sometimes a dessert.
Usually, I try to have
some kind of fruit because
we have several diabetics.”
West said clients appreciated
the transition from
restaurant food to homecooked
food.
“They were very pleased.
They all mentioned their
favorites, and you would
try to work that in at least
once a month for them,”
West said. “As you get to
know them, you stop to visit
with them longer. It’s very
rewarding and a pleasant
thing to do.”
West has come to know
the people on her route
well after years of service.
Some have gone on and off
the route as their health
improves or declines. She
has also mourned as clients
have moved to a nursing
facility or died.
“If they go to a home, we
immediately put them on a
prayer list, or we put their
family on the prayer list if
they’ve passed away,” she
said. “Every time you pass
their house, you think of
them.”
Bernice has volunteered
to cook since November,
but Velma delivered meals
in the past.
“I enjoy doing it,” Velma

said. “You do what the Lord
calls you to do.”
“I love to cook,” Bernice
said. “I think it’s a great
ministry to come in once a
month. I think we all think
of it as a ministry.”
And while the volunteers
feel the emotional benefits
of the program, they also
hear positive words from
the clients.
“All of our people are very,
very appreciative. They
never fail to say thank you.
After all these years, they
still say thank you,” West
said. “It’s very rewarding.
Several of the women in
church, namely some who
are teachers, take over in
the summer and let me
have a three-month rest.
They have gotten to where
they love it as much as I do.
They cook, and there are
other ladies who deliver.
Many people get a hand in
it.”

Many young adults mistakenly
believe that sexually transmitted
diseases, or STDs, are something
that happens to somebody else,

music at First Presbyterian
Church in Bridgeport.

more than pointing a lens at the obvious.
When covering sports, photographer
Joe Duty searches for alternate
means to tell a story.
Capturing expressions of thrill, anxiety,
exasperation, desperation, determination,
victory and defeat no doubt
reign paramount in the mind of the
photographer. But deeper observation
reveals another world beneath the surface.
At a track meet at Northwest school
district, a fleet footed pole vaulter darts
across the clay colored runway. Rather
than shoot the obvious athlete in action,
Joe tells the story by portraying
an often unseen and unnoticed reality,
light and shadow, shoes and track.
This lesson is not to focus solely on
the subject at hand, but look also at the
objects, shadows and dimensions surrounding
the subject.

common problem for them
is the red-headed wood borer.
This insect looks like a yellow jacket,
only at two-thirds the size. It has a burgundy-red
head, and it flies in swarms
around declining brush of redbuds, silver
maples, hackberries and other weakwooded
trees. There isn’t a good preventive
spray for this pest. In fact, it rarely
shows up until there are other stresses.
Other, less likely factors would
be mechanical injuries to the
trunk and weedkiller damage.
Hopefully, there is the beginning
of an answer in there
somewhere.
Dear Neil: Very few of my jonquils
bloomed. Their foliage is healthy looking,
and I believe they get ample sun. They
multiply, but they don’t bloom. Should I
dig them up and replace them with new
bulbs, or would fertilizing help
This is not a nutritional issue. Many
of the big, hybrid daffodils and narcissus
bloom only their first years in our gardens.
That’s true for King Alfred, Unsurpassable,
Mount Hood and others. Stick
with early-flowering and small to midsized
flowers for best chance of repeat
bloom year-after-year. Some of the best
include Ice Follies, Carlton, Geranium,
Cheerfulness, Grand Primo and Tete-a-
Tete.
