means to tell a story.<br />
Capturing expressions of thrill, anxiety,<br />
exasperation, desperation, determination,<br />
victory and defeat no doubt<br />
reign paramount in the mind of the<br />
photographer. But deeper observation<br />
reveals another world beneath the surface.<br />
At a track meet at Northwest school<br />
district, a fleet footed pole vaulter darts<br />
across the clay colored runway. Rather<br />
than shoot the obvious athlete in action,<br />
Joe tells the story by portraying<br />
an often unseen and unnoticed reality,<br />
light and shadow, shoes and track.<br />
This lesson is not to focus solely on<br />
the subject at hand, but look also at the<br />
objects, shadows and dimensions surrounding<br />
the subject.<br />

is the red-headed wood borer.<br />
This insect looks like a yellow jacket,<br />
only at two-thirds the size. It has a burgundy-red<br />
head, and it flies in swarms<br />
around declining brush of redbuds, silver<br />
maples, hackberries and other weakwooded<br />
trees. There isn’t a good preventive<br />
spray for this pest. In fact, it rarely<br />
shows up until there are other stresses.<br />
Other, less likely factors would<br />
be mechanical injuries to the<br />
trunk and weedkiller damage.<br />
Hopefully, there is the beginning<br />
of an answer in there<br />
somewhere.<br />
Dear Neil: Very few of my jonquils<br />
bloomed. Their foliage is healthy looking,<br />
and I believe they get ample sun. They<br />
multiply, but they don’t bloom. Should I<br />
dig them up and replace them with new<br />
bulbs, or would fertilizing help<br />
This is not a nutritional issue. Many<br />
of the big, hybrid daffodils and narcissus<br />
bloom only their first years in our gardens.<br />
That’s true for King Alfred, Unsurpassable,<br />
Mount Hood and others. Stick<br />
with early-flowering and small to midsized<br />
flowers for best chance of repeat<br />
bloom year-after-year. Some of the best<br />
include Ice Follies, Carlton, Geranium,<br />
Cheerfulness, Grand Primo and Tete-a-<br />
Tete.<br />
