National Trust We’re being counted The Census of India 2011 was unique and momentous for people with disabilities. The Census of 2001 had clubbed disabilities together, especially under ‘Mental’ both Intellectual Disability & Mental Illness were counted. However, in this census, with excellent advocacy from people with disabilities, the National Trust disabilities have been enumerated separately. Q. 5. REMOTE AREA FUNDING SCHEME Annual Report 2010-2011 5.1 India is a large country with difficult terrains, tribal areas and areas not easily accessible. There are many remote areas wherein facilities offered through various programmes of Central/State Govt. or private sector/NGOs have not reached. The National Trust Act also states that only organizations registered with it can run its schemes/programmes. However we are able to reach out to 491 districts only through our NGOs, and 122 are still unreached and hence a mechanism was devised to reach these areas through Remote Area Funding Scheme. 5.2 Originally the Remote Area Funding Scheme was conceived to provide financial assistance to organizations registered with the National Trust to work in the uncovered districts and to encourage setting up of registered organizations for those uncovered districts. However, due to operational and financial difficulties the desired outcome was not forthcoming and as such the scheme was revisited and revised in the year 2009-10. Under the revised guidelines, 20% additional grant is being given to the registered organizations working in the remote districts which were already mapped in the year 2009-10. 5.3 During the year, grant of Rs.3,67,000/- was released covering 10 districts.
