After the Applause Arabian Nights Last Saturday, the cast members of The Arabian Nights bowed for the last time and walked off the stage ending a four-day-run of shows. Our journey, however, had started many months before in April. I auditioned for The Arabian Nights because I had never done a play and wanted to give it a go. I soon found out that rehearsals were enjoyable and extremely worthwhile. The rehearsals began slowly as all the cast members got to know each other and the story. With some mishaps, it took a while for the production to come together but eventually it did. I was a member of the cast and band and consequently I got more experience than most other actors in the play. All the band members got to go to a recording studio and record the main songs in the play. This was really exciting as it was the first time recording at a professional studio for all of us and the music sounded terrific. The composer of the music for the play, Ben Gurton, wrote some inspiring musical pieces which sounded incredible and added immense depth to the story. The show is based on King Shahryar, who finds his wife cheating on him with a slave. He then kills his wife and proceeds to marry, sleep with and kill a new virgin girl every day. This goes on for three years until Scheherezade, the woman selected by Shahryar to be his new wife, manages to keep him preoccupied by telling him stories. She tells him new tales for 1001 nights. The king falls in love with her and he realises that he cannot kill her. The play was made up of many different stories which all had some message or moral value. The whole performance came together through the many Sunday and Wednesday rehearsals which focused on certain scenes or movement pieces. At first I wasn’t sure how well it was going to go but eventually Ms Keen, our director, shaped the play so that it was both entertaining and poignant. The days leading up to the final performances were packed full of rehearsals and definitely had its ups and downs. The practice runs on Sunday and Monday went really well but on Tuesday afternoon, the day before the final performance, one of the leading men tore ligaments in his ankle playing rugby. It meant that he had to use a walking stick during the performance. Noone was sure what it would be like, but in the end I felt it actually added to his character and enhanced his performance. The reaction that we received from the audience on each night was mind-blowing. Everyone seemed to really enjoy it. They found parts of it funny and others more confronting. Personally, it was an experience that I will never forget and I recommend that everyone gets involved in a play in some way or another during their School life at Cranbrook.
