Rugby The 1 st XV gathered together at the school bus at midday with big expectations of what was to be a do or die fight for our lives out at Aloysius. Unfortunately Aloysius worked around us on the fringes and went over the line in the corner to score 5–0. Through our set piece, Cranbrook bounced back before half time with a try to Luke Brown in the corner. Aloysius capitalised on our silly mistakes and after a few good phases of footy, they eventually crossed the line a second time to increase their lead, 12–7. This was a wake up call to Cranbrook and we answered with good natural phase play, allowing Paris Cockinos to put Sam Mangioni over the line with a nice inside ball. With Josh Boulton coming off the field due to injury, Tim Brown took the conversion and slotted it to put us in front, 14–12. Results v St Aloysius Round 1 Unfortunately, as has happened in the past for this unlucky 1 st XV, a little mistake allowed Aloysius to pounce on a knock on and run through untouched to score under the posts. This blow was one too many for a devastated and crestfallen 1 st XV. Cranbrook constantly seemed dangerous and were putting together some well-organised phase plays. Although Aloysius 1st XV 14 29 L Brown L, Mangioni Tries. Slabber 2 Conv 13C 35 0 W Morgan, Barakat, Pether 3, Sprague, Theophile Tries 15As Captain Judd Harvey winning a lineout took advantage of a lapse in concentration from the boys, the game was still well and truly open at half time (8–7). Quick thinking and swift ball skills through a number of forwards and backs set Tom Erskine up for a well-deserved try. Fighting to the end, the final score of 16–12 did not truly mirror how the team performed against Aloysius. The 3 rd XV this week came up against a well-drilled Aloysius side and this showed early on with Cranbrook going down a try inside the first ten minutes. The game was lost for Cranbrook in the early minutes of the second half, when we let Aloysius in again. However, it must be said that the team produced some entertaining rugby in the last 15 minutes of the game. Jack McElroy crossed the line for a hat-trick in his best game for the season and this allowed the 3rds to restore some pride with the final score being 29–15. The Cranbrook 4 th XV got off to a positive start, dominating both possession and field position, and should have been further than 5–0 in front at half time. There’s no substitute for match fitness and this combined with some disappointing decisions from the referee went against us
in the second half, and we ended up losing 2–1. Jack Mort, Elliot Scali, Peter Knespal and Mr Simons The 16As knew that discipline and control was the only way to be successful against Aloys. Unfortunately the team did not demonstrate the discipline needed in difficult circumstances, frequently giving the referee an excuse to march the team another ten metres. The 16Bs began with confidence after a close fixture in Round 1 and maintained it for most of the first half. However, a string of penalties always seemed to rescue Aloysius every time they were under pressure and the weight of possession that followed began to take its toll. Aloysius went to uncontested scrums to alleviate the one area of superiority Cranbrook had enjoyed and with the loss of dominance in this area Cranbrook seemed to lose its way. Mr Burr and Mr Downey In the 15As, the intensity and desire was evident from the first whistle with defensive pressure creating a chance which Nick Taylor took after only five minutes, scoring a converted try under the posts. After the break our boys began playing like a team instead of a group of individuals. Ball retention improved and passing and running with the ball became possible as backs and forwards linked, often charging down field at will. Still after ten minutes into the half the score remained static. It was hard to tell if it was the relentless attack or the fitness levels of the Cranbrook team that finally broke St Aloysius’, but once our passing and backing up style of play exhausted their defenders, the flood gates opened. Four quick tries in the final 15 minutes was just reward for our team that continued to work hard at supporting the ball carrier and, with attacking players left over both times, Taylor Burgess crossed the line in his man of the match performance. The 15Bs saw Cranbrook able to keep St Aloysius’ scoreless at the weekend in an exciting and dynamic display of rugby. Playing on Hordern always inspires a sense of occasion and the U15Bs began with purpose. With a number of chances squandered, Cranbrook entered the half-time break with nothing to show on the scoreboard for all of the chances they had been given. Bagging two quick tries, Robert Booth and Joshua Crowe were available to run off the sides of cleaner and better structured rucks. With the change in fortunes St Aloysius’ seemed to capitulate and Cranbrook maintained its momentum to score an excellent win. At half time in the 15Cs, we knew Aloys confidence would be high as they had held us up in defence for most of the first half, and they didn’t disappoint, coming out strong in offence, scoring a try within five minutes of the second half. We made an encouraging counter-attack through smart forward play, Andrew Crone bravely throwing himself over the try line. However, from this point on, Cranbrook in the lead, looking strong and the better team all morning, just switched off, allowing Aloys to easily break through, scoring a further 4 tries and a conversion. Mr Toia, Mr Gauchat and Ms McCann In the 14As fixture, the whole first half was played in St Aloysius’ half and a try to Ed Carter led to a 14 –0 lead at the break. The Cranbrook forwards totally dominated lineouts and scrums paving the way for smart kicking from Jack Remond and Darcy Cordell to turn the opposition around. The second half continued in the same way for Cranbrook with 2 more tries to Marcello Poli who chased a kick 50 metres and still won the race for the ball to score an outstanding try. 1st XV Number 8 Sam Mangioni with the U/9s In the 14Bs the first half was dominated by Cranbrook, with Roy Harrison directing his team around the field and scoring a try himself. In the first round the Cranbrook team had let a good lead nearly turn into a defeat, and the boys and coaches were definite that that was not going to happen again. The second half saw how much the team has improved. Tries were scored by Damon Weiner-Angelopulo, Langton McCombe, Aaron Stern and Jack Morgan. The 14Cs had another impressive win this week. Good training translated to the pitch with 4 early tries and a conversion, before complacency temporarily got the better of our boys. They fought back well in the second half to post a convincing win. Page 31 - Cranbrook Chronicle Mr Munday, Mr Vanderfield and Mr Newling 1st XV Prop Paris Cockinos with the U/10s There were few highlights for the Cranbrook 13As. However, special mention must go to Tom Mills for scoring a double and Ken Savvas provided much needed determination when he came on as a substitute. In the forwards Beau Mayer was again a standout and Oskar Szangolies deserves a mention for his work rate around the field. Even after some late changes the 13Bs played with great cohesion and totally outplayed there Aloysius rivals. Felix Farley showed that good attitude at training transcends into game day, playing what was his best game of the season. The 13Cs should take great heart in how they performed this week, as they performed to the level that they have worked hard for all season. They ran hard and straight, used the pass and phase skills they spent the last week perfecting and never stopped rampaging. Mr Parsons and Mr Berridge
