Year 8 Languages Day Year 8 Languages Day was an enjoyable and memorable experience for all Year 8 students. There was a Japanese drumming TaikOz performance, a Roman weapons presentation, French quizzes, t-shirt making and much more. Boules Two of the highlights, for me, were boules and calligraphy. Boules is a French game which involves two or more opponents who have to throw a heavy ball across any surface to try and get as close as possible to a smaller wooden ball called the jack. We played a round robin divided into three groups and the winning group went on to play the winning team of the other class. It was an enjoyable game which anyone is able to play anywhere, anytime. Calligraphy The second highlight was the Japanese calligraphy, Shodo. I especially enjoyed this activity because we were given a variety of different Japanese characters and animals to write and draw in special ink. We practised writing them for some of the activity until we were ready for our final work. Once we had finished them, we showed them to Ms Jin and we were ready to take them home. Languages Day was great fun and I wished it were longer. I hope the Year 8s next year will find it as much fun as we did. Japanese drumming Joe McLachlan The Japanese drumming workshop, TaikOz, came to Cranbrook to show us the musical influence Japanese had on the musical world. The drummers started with a music piece that they made and it was enjoyable to listen to. After that they introduced themselves and started the next song which involved some volunteers from the audience. We chanted ‘Washoi’ as each volunteer had a go at drumming. For their next piece, one of the performers played a Japanese flute and it look really hard. After this flute music it came to the last song which also involved more volunteers and this time, luckily, I was chosen to participate. I had to sit down and play small Japanese drums. A song and rhythm was created by one of the gentlemen and we played it with the help of the big drums which kept the rhythm. Everyone enjoyed it. Then off we went to the War Memorial Hall for the Roman weapons display and talk. Roman Weapons Display Battles, chain mail, swords and weaponries are every boy’s favourite and luckily enough we got to touch and feel these instruments of warfare in the armour presentation. The presenter was very funny and told us interesting stories and gave us a lot of information. Volunteers were asked to create battle scenes and wear chain mail. He told us about different types of swords and the type of armour the different ranks of warriors wore. He was a great story-teller and all boys enjoyed his presentation. Recess and lunch Page 18 - Cranbrook Chronicle Aaron Frumar For recess we had a choice of pain au chocolat or snail and for lunch we had some Japanese chicken yakitori and sausages. Everything was really delicious and all boys enjoyed their BBQ lunch. Charlie Henderson T-shirt Painting T-shirt painting was a blast! We were given a list of expressions in French, Japanese and Latin to write as slogans and to use in the design of our t-shirts. We used our imagination to design our very own World Cup t-shirts. It was fun. I designed a t-shirt that said ‘Go the Samurai Blues!’ with a Japanese sword. When I looked around the room I could see that everyone was having a great time and were chatting excitedly about what they had designed. Thank you Ms Gregory and Mr Ross! Pictionary My group started the day with Mr Hanson. We were given an object, symbol or place to act out or draw in Latin or French within a time limit. The first task was to act it out with a time limit of one minute. The next task was to draw it on the board with a time limit of two minutes. I remember that my team lost by sixteen points. We where no match against the other team! We then moved to 4.8 and played a game on the Smartboard with Mr Savic. This game was challenging but enjoyed by all.
