Basketball became family
affair in rural Wyoming
Sean took notice of the talent his son showed
and realized when it came to Terrance’s future
in basketball, Laramie wasn’t the best place to
be noticed by colleges.
J.K. Mullen High School in Highlands Ranch,
Colo., welcomed Terrance onto its basketball
team for his junior and senior years of high
school. While in Colorado, he received more
looks from colleges than he had in Wyoming.
After growing up in Laramie and regularly
attending UW games with his family, Terrance
always wanted to be a cowboy.
“He was the biggest Cowboy fan growing up.
He had to go to the Cowboy basketball games,”
Sean said.
Terrance wanted to follow in his father’s
footsteps, but the UW call never came. Terrance
never even got a look as a prospect.
His whole family was shocked by this news.
Why wouldn’t UW want a player from home
Someone who wanted to play there Someone
everyone felt was good enough to be on the
team
Both Sean and Terry felt hurt by UW’s reaction
to Terrance’s disinterest.
“It hurt that they didn’t even look at him,”
Sean said.
“Everything happens for a reason” is how
Terry expresses her emotions about the decision
UW made two and a half years ago.
By the end of his senior year, Terrance had
his mind set on Weber State University in
Ogden, Utah.
After having a rough first year on the basketball
team at WSU, Terrance and his family
decided Ogden wasn’t his best fit. Not knowing
exactly where he wanted to go, Terrance looked
around for a different opportunity.
That was when Laramie County Community
College came knocking on his door. When
Terrance answered, it was an opportunity he
wasn’t about to pass up. Attending LCCC gave
all of Terrance’s family in Laramie a chance to
watch him play again.
Terrance immediately fit into the LCCC game
plan. As a freshman at LCCC, he was on the
starting five.
Along with being a gifted athlete, Terrance
is also a good student. Although basketball was
always important in Terrance’s life, his parents
also stressed his priorities. “School, family, and
then basketball,” Sean said.
LCCC’s men’s basketball team head coach,
Jason Ficca, kept all his athletes focused when
it comes to their studies. Since Ficca has been
coaching at LCCC, the athletes’ grades have
significantly improved.
Terrance also decided to involve himself in
LCCC’s student government, so he can take part
in all that happens on campus.
Going into his sophomore season, Terrance
knew Ficca had made the decision to name him
team captain. In his leadership role, Terrance
wanted to set an example for his teammates, by
keeping his grades high, exercising more and
motivating everyone to play harder.
Coming back from the summer of 2010,
Terrance was in good shape and ready to play.
His older cousin Junior kept him in shape by
working out with him regularly.
On the court, Terrance displays his leadership
role, helping teammates remember where
they are supposed to go during each play.
“He will always play hard…everything he has
now he has worked for,” Sean said.
Terrance also follows in his dad’s footsteps
with his game play. Sean was nicknamed “The
Prince of Pilfer” during his time on the UW
team because of his ease at stealing the ball.
Right on his heels, Terrance is one of the leaders
in both steals and assists at LCCC.
Even on breaks from college, Sean found a
way to motivate Terrance to do extra workouts.
While Terrance was relaxing, Sean would casually
comment, “You haven’t done anything all
day” Although Terrance might not have gotten
up immediately to go for a run, Sean’s words
would eventually get him to work out.
Knowing his time is limited at LCCC,
Terrance is beginning to look at colleges to attend
next year. On his list again—UW.
For Terrance, the second time around might
give him the second chance he needs.
Terrance will continue to practice and work
hard to go onto the next level. The advice given
to him by his father will continue to play in his
head when stepping up to the line to shoot:
Feet. Bend. Elbow. Follow-through.
