Safe & sound
The college counseling and wellness
center has moved, offering students
a safe, private environment to seek
help from trained counselors.
The Laramie
County Community
College Counseling
and Campus Wellness
Center has moved
from the Student
Services Building
to Room 129 of the
College Community
Center across from ID
services.
Director of
counseling, Dianne
Lowe-Carpenter, said
the decision to move
the offices was recommended
by the advising
center personnel
to separate advising
and counseling. It was
necessary to differentiate
the two services,
reducing any confusion
students might
have. Students can
now go somewhere
else for advising on
their classes and
somewhere for mental
health counseling.
Students can be
comfortable in the
new more private and
confidential setting.
When the counseling
center was in the
same area as advising,
Lowe-Carpenter
said it was “not a safe
enough environment
for students to ask for
help.”In moving the
center, advisers and
counselors hope to
reduce a stigma
around mental health
and campus wellness
by making the
environment feel safer
and more inviting.
The new offices
are centrally situated
around the student
center hub of the
new dining facility,
tutoring center and
library. “With the new
location easy to find,
there is an expected
increase in students;
new students have
already arrived asking
for help,” Lowe-
Carpenter said.
While smaller
offices are the disadvantage
of the changes,
students now have
a waiting area and a
more “comfortable,
cozy environment,”
Lowe-Carpenter said.
Each office is quiet
and homey to put
students at ease and
reduce the intimidating
appearance of a
normal counseling
center.
Lowe-Carpenter
said the counseling
center is pleased with
the new changes to
the offices and location
and appreciative
of the support that
they have received.
They are also thankful
for the one-time
stimulus money they
received to fund the
move and new offices,
leaving them feeling
valued by the campus
community.
Many resources are
available to students
if they are nervous
about going into the
center or are seeking
more information,
Lowe-Carpenter said.
Along with updating
the offices, the center
has updated its phone
number and website.
The website contains
online health tests
and self-evaluators
students can easily
access. There is also
more information
students can access
in the privacy of their
own home on alcohol
abuse, anxiety,
depression and
suicide prevention.
Students may find this
information useful
when going through
a hard time either at
school or at home.
Students are
invited and encouraged
by the staff in
the wellness center to
check out the website
via the LCCC homepage,
Eagle’s Eye and
the LCCC Facebook
page. Brochures and
handouts are
available that contain
more information
and semester events
students can attend.
All employees in
the counseling and
wellness center are
trained in mental
health and wellness
and are licensed mental
health professionals.
Lowe-Carpenter
wanted every student
to know “we’re here
for them” to meet the
needs of the student.
Other services
available through
the center are crisis
counseling, personal
counseling, stress
management, health
and fitness management
and biofeedback.
A walk-in counselor
is available Monday
through Friday between
8 a.m. and
5 p.m. However, if
there is a crisis and
students need immediate
help, they can
call campus security
at 307-630-0645. More
information on scheduling
an appointment
is available at
307-778-4397
24 hours a day.
