“These things I
have spoken to
you, that My joy
may remain in
you, and that
your joy may be
full.” That is the
message of
Easter and the
Resurrection.
John 5:11
DEAN’S MESSAGE KEEP THE PASCHAL LIGHT BURNING
Christos Anesti;
I was filling up my gas
tank at a station near our
Saint Sophia Cathedral after
the morning Agape service
on Easter Sunday. I was sort
of “zoned out” as the kids
say, looking as the gas pump
meter rolled numbers past
my tired eyes. A shrill sound
pierced the cacophony of the
Easter traffic on Pico and
Vermont.
A Christian “evangelist”
standing on a milk crate and
using a battery powered
megaphone was shouting
from the opposite corner
about the end of the world,
the eminent second coming
of Jesus and the horrible destruction
and catastrophe that
would afflict all who were
“not saved.” He was screaming
at the top of his voice like
a desperate politician looking
to be re-elected. Waving a
large Bible as though he was
swatting flies, he spoke of the
earthquakes around the
planet and wars signifying
that these were signs of the
end times.
No one paid much attention
to him. Some walked
by him shaking their heads. A
young man pumping gas next
to me, seeing my clerical collar
smiled and said: “That’s
why I’m not a Christian. It’s
guys like that whether on the
street corner or on Christian
television that really turn me
off, with their theatrics, their
down, dark, pessimistic
B*#% S#%!. All doom and
gloom. It’s so pathetic. On
the one hand they’re either
preaching health, wealth, and
success or they’re sending
someone to the “pit of hell.”
I didn’t respond or challenge
him. I just smiled and tried to
say something pleasant about
the great Easter weather.
Driving away, I thought
about the uptight doom and
gloom “corner evangelists” and
the young man turned off to
any rational message of the
Gospel of Jesus Christ by these
shenanigans.
It is often true that many
Christians regardless of denomination
seem dour, gloomy
and overly serious about life;
seeing the devil in every nook
and cranny. For them the
weight of the salvation of the
world is upon their shoulders.
I’ve heard some Christians say:
“I have a burden for the salvation
and conversion of our
country.” It is as though they
are personally responsible for
the process and outcome. It
seems for them Christian life is
like sucking on an overly ripe
pickle.
There is plenty of doom
and gloom in life without making
God the center of it. In
reality, true Christianity should
reflect life changing joy. The
joy of Pascha. The gospel of St.
John 10:10 quotes Jesus as saying:
“I have come that they
may have life and that they may
have it more abundantly.”
Continuing in the same spirit,
the Lord says in the same gospel
chapter 5:11, “These things
I have spoken to you, that My
joy may remain in you, and that
your joy may be full.” That is
the message of Easter and the
Resurrection.
The challenge as an Orthodox
Christian is to keep the
light of the Paschal candles
burning in our heart and in all
our actions, now that the
“highs” of Holy Week and
Easter are behind us.
The services of Holy
Week and Pascha moved us.
Timelessness intersected time.
Some experienced the gift
of tears especially on Holy
Thursday and Holy Friday.
The Holy Spirit spoke to
the inner depth of our hungry
souls in tears and in so
many other ways. Let us
keep the joy of that experience
alive when doubts and
difficulties arise.
For the many others,
the Paschal candle’s first
light piercing the darkness
of our cavernous Cathedral
and the chanting of the
hymn: “Come receive the
light from the unwaning
light and glorify Christ, who
is risen from the dead”
brought back nostalgic
memories of youth when
parents, relatives, and
friends huddled together
and waited for the first
Christos Anesti to be proclaimed
with deep emotion.
No fearful shouting,
no condemnation, no anxiety,
no force. Just shear joy
and hope surrounding us in
the Lord’s resurrected
LOVE and renewal. From
the first ode of the resurrection
service, we heard: “It is
the day of the resurrection.
O people let us be radiant.
It is Pascha! Pascha of the
Lord! For Christ God has
carried us over from death
unto life and from earth
unto heaven, as we sing a
victory hymn!!”
Keep The Paschal light
burning.
“When you write your will or update it, please remember Saint Sophia Cathedral. Your gift will live into eternity.”
Herald Page 3
We inherited a great
Cathedral with amazing
surrounding properties
because someone had
FAITH; someone SER-
VICED his Lord with
his VISION and put the
Hellenic Orthodox faith
on the map in Los Angeles;
and now it is our
God given responsibility
to continue with the
same or even greater faith
our service to the Lord.
Our Lord and Savior
Jesus Christ sent His
Disciples into the crowd
to ask that they give what
they could for the benefit
of all.
May we all be encouraged
knowing that
He will bless our efforts
and multiply our own
gifts today, just as He did
that day, making our sacrifice
an abundance.
In today’s world,
raising money and having
a vision is not about a
bunch of old people writing
large checks. It is
about all of the people
writing average checks
because we all have a vision,
we all have pride
and we all believe in the
same God.
You and I, all of us,
regardless as to how
much we can personally
give, we must believe and
remember that WE ARE
TODAY’S DISCI-
PLES!
Please do not think,
even for a moment, that
your donation, regardless
of size, will not be
counted and your name
and that of your family’s
PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
will not be mentioned. It will
be counted and it will be
received with great appreciation,
Christian love and respect.
Come one, come all and
declare that you are ready to
offer your service, your vision
and your treasure, so
we can continue the proud
work of all those people
who have proven to us their
service, vision and treasure.
The gates are open, the
plans are set, and now is
your turn to join the winning
team in the glory of our
Lord.
We are all familiar with
what our grandparents were
teaching us: “Fasouli –
fasouli – gemeezee to
sakouli “(bean by bean you
will fill the sack). Let us
prove to all that we can do
much better: “When you
help to row the boat. You
don’t have time to rock
it.”
As we are approaching
the vacation season I am
asking you to remember
your Stewardship obligation
and remind you that the Cathedral
does not take a vacation.
We are here all year to
serve you and to take care of
all the needs of our beloved
Cathedral and our prayers
are that you too will be part
of this process. Thank you!
Easter week was as always,
a spiritual and blessed
experience for all, we had
high attendance of Parishioners
that joined us in celebration
of Pascha.
In the last issue of the
Herald I reported that our
dear friend and supporter
Aleka Pantazis and her
committee had decorated
the Epitaphio. That information
was incorrect and I
would like to thank Aleka
for calling me with the correction.
For the last two years
the Committee for the
Epitaphio has been spearheaded
by Katie Eager
assisted by Tina Callas,
Vannie Karavas, Mary
Gallanis, Georgia Arvanitis,
Cleo Andrews,
Christine Kades, Anastasia
(Natasa) Kovyias,
Olga Kovyias and Eleni
Kyriacou. Thank you ladies,
the Epitaphio was
spectacular… kai tou xronou
After the Agape Service
we all gathered in
Pasadena for the traditional
Easter Picnic. This
year’s Picnic was sponsored
by the Saint Sophia
Foundation and I would
like to thank all the organizers
for a job well done.
The weather was on
the cold side, but it did not
keep us from having a
great time, with good food
and traditional pastries
provided by our Ladies
Philoptohos.
Christos Anesti, Christ is
Stewardship in Action
MARSHA and KATHY ZAGORIANOS
CURRENT MINISTRY LEADERS, CHILDCARE
BERTHA ZAGORIANOS
PAST MINISTRY LEADER, CHILDCARE
SAM ZAGORIANOS
PAST VOLUNTEER, NARTHEX
Marsha and Kathy are the daughters of Sam and Bertha
Zagorianos, and the granddaughters of the late Rev. Timothy
Zagorianos, who served as a priest at St. Nicholas
Church in Northridge until his death in 1967. Sam and
Bertha met at Saint Sophia and were married in 1955. They
both sang in the choir for five years. In 1969, Sam started
volunteering in the Narthex and Bertha in the nursery.
They retired in 2007 after 41 years of service. At 91 and 81
years of age, they are well taken care of by their two wonderful
daughters. “In 2008, I started taking care of my parents
full time. God has blessed me with such wonderful
parents and I am fortunate to have this time with them and
to care for them as they’ve always cared for me,” Kathy
said.
It is their parents’ footsteps that Marsha and Kathy have
followed with their service to Saint Sophia, starting with
Sunday school, Greek school, Jr. Choir and their lifelong
commitment to our Childcare Ministry.
At the young age of 12, Marsha knew she wanted to work
with children and was ready when Presvytera Lambert
asked her to help in the nursery in 1973. She has been
there ever since – 37 years! Marsha has earned an Associate
of Science degree in Early Childhood Education and
has worked as a preschool teacher for LAUSD for 31
years. Kathy was educated in accounting and has been an
accounting professional for 25 years. In 1985, Kathy
started volunteering in the nursery and has been there
since then – 25 years!
The nursery is open every Sunday throughout the year during
the Liturgy and provides loving care to our Saint
Herald
Sophia family’s infants and children up to four years old,
while their parents attend the Liturgy. With Marsha’s Early
Childhood Education and extensive experience as a preschool
teacher, the nursery reflects a preschool environment.
It is kept clean and safe for the children and all toys
are age-appropriate. On Sundays, parents leave their children
in the nursery, pick them up later for communion,
and return them after communion. While in the nursery,
the children enjoy playing, and the older ones learn about
the faith through Sunday School lessons.
For the past 41 years, the Zagorianos women have cared
for well over 1,000 children. Every Sunday morning they
have been waiting in the nursery to welcome our children,
care for them, love them and teach them our faith, while
their parents get the opportunity to enjoy the Liturgy.
“We love to see the children grow up in the St. Sophia
community. Many of them are grown now and are bringing
their own children to the nursery. It is a joy for us each
Sunday to serve our church, and we look forward to doing
it for as many years as our Mom did,” Kathy said.
These amazing stewards are part of the “Unsung Heroes”
of our parish. They have applied their faith through works
for our community, well away from any limelight. From
our Saint Sophia family, THANK YOU, Mr. and Mrs.
Zagorianos, Marsha and Kathy for being such devoted
stewards to our Saint Sophia Ministry. We are blessed and
honored to have you in our community.
Thank you for supporting our Stewardship Program.
LIFE MEMBERSHIP ENDOWMENT FUND
In the early 1980s, our Parish Council introduced a novel
idea in an economic environment when interest rates were 8-
10%: If people would make a single gift of $10,000 to the Cathedral,
they would become Life Members, and the interest of
$800 to $1,000 from that gift would be counted as yearly membership.
Those were the days when the word stewardship was not
yet used and lived out as it is today. Of course the high interest
rates and dividends of the early 80s are a nostalgic memory.
Today, the Life Membership Fund has become the Endowment
Fund to support our Ministry when emergencies may
arise. Thank God we have it.
**Please forgive us if we have mistakenly
The Fund is still viable and periodically parishioners become
Life Members and add to the principal or corpus of the
Fund, which is conservatively invested and growing. Life Members
are prominently recognized on our “Walk of the Blessing
Hand” Donor Wall.
In addition to their one time gift, most Life Members have
been generous yearly participants in our Stewardship Program as
well. We are deeply grateful to them and pray for the participation
of all Life Members, as the Stewardship Program
is the life-blood of our Saint Sophia Ministry.
Dear Philoptohos Ladies,
Christos Anesti! Christ is
Risen! The Holy Week
services were most beautiful
this year. Loving
congratulations to our
dedicated Dean, Father
John and to Father Bill,
and the many others who
made our Services so inspiring:
the choir, Cantors,
readers, the Epitaphion
bearers, and the
young myrrh-bearing myrophores
who made the
Epitaphion procession so
somber, so emotional,
such a counterpoint for
the feast of the Resurrection.
On Sunday, at our
Easter picnic, we all enjoyed
the vibrance of
how the tradition lives
on! Meeting friends and
relatives, children playing
all around us, food and
goodies everywhere! It
was a happy time for our
extended community to
Herald Page 11
By her side was a small
nylon suitcase. The apartment
looked as if no one
had lived in it for years. All
the furniture was covered
with sheets.
There were no clocks
on the walls, no knickknacks
or utensils on the
counters. In the corner was
a cardboard box filled with
photos and glassware.
"Would you carry my bag
out to the car" she said. I
took the suitcase to the cab,
then returned to assist the
woman.
She took my arm and
we walked slowly toward
the curb.
She kept thanking me
for my kindness. "It's nothing"
I told her. "I just try to
treat my passengers the way
I would want my
mother treated."
"Oh, you're such a good
boy", she said. When we
got in the cab, she gave me
an address and then asked,
"Could you drive through
From PHILANTHROPIA
Forwarded by an Internet Friend
downtown" "It's not the
shortest way," I answered
quickly.
"Oh, I don't mind," she said.
"I'm in no hurry. I'm on my
way to a hospice."
I looked in the rear-view
mirror. Her eyes were glistening.
"I don't have any family
left," she continued in a soft
voice. "The doctor says I don't
have very long." I quietly
reached over and shut off the
meter.
"What route would you like me
to take" I asked.
For the next two hours,
we drove through the city. She
showed me the building where
she had once worked as an
elevator operator.
We drove through the
neighborhood where she and
her husband had lived when
they were newlyweds. She had
me pull up in front of a furniture
warehouse that had once
been a ballroom where she had
gone dancing as a girl.
Sometimes she'd ask me
to slow in front of a particular
building or corner and would
sit staring into the darkness,
saying nothing.
As the first hint of sun
was creasing the horizon, she
suddenly said, "I'm tired.
Let's go now." We drove in
silence to the address she had
given me. It was a low building,
like a small convalescent
home, with a driveway that
passed under a portico.
Two orderlies came out
to the cab as soon as we
pulled up. They were solicitous
and intent, watching her
every move. They must have
been expecting her. I opened
the trunk and took the small
suitcase to the door.
The woman was already
seated in a wheelchair. "How
much do I owe you" she
asked, reaching into her
purse. "Nothing," I said.
"You have to make a living,"
she answered. "There are
other passengers," I responded.
Almost without thinking,
I bent and gave her a
hug. She held onto me
tightly. "You gave an old
woman a little moment of
joy," she said. "Thank you."
I squeezed her hand,
and then walked into the dim
morning light. Behind me, a
door shut. It was the sound
of the closing of a life.
I didn't pick up any
more passengers that shift. I
drove aimlessly lost in
thought. For the rest of that
day, I could hardly talk. What
if that woman had gotten an
angry driver, or one who was
impatient to end his shift
What if I had refused to
take the run, or had honked
once, then driven away
On a quick review, I
don't think that I have done
anything more important in
my life.
We're conditioned to
think that our lives revolve
around great moments.
But great moments often
catch us unaware, beautifully
wrapped in what others
may consider a small one.
News from the Hellenic Academy
Our school celebrated the
Anniversary of the Greek
Independence Day on
March 21st with great success
and unprecedented
participation. We thank all
the parents who organized
the event, esp. Soula-Marie
Perdis, Joanna Papachristos,
Evie Marcopulos, and
Maria Tsilimidos. The parents
amazed us with their
very generous donations
and we thank them deeply.
All our students and all
teachers worked hard to
prepare a lively performance.
Congratulations to
everyone.
The Hellenic Academy
would like to thank the
AHEPA, Hesperia-Alkandre
Home Foundation, for their
ongoing support of our educational
program. Last year they
showed us great generosity in
supporting the creation of a
permanent Children’s Library
collection. This year they have
shown us again great generosity
donating $6,000 to our
school! AHEPA's donations
will support several worthy
activities.
We will cover some of the expenses
of the students who will
take the Attainment of Greek
Language Examination. This
prestigious examination is organized
by the Greek Ministry
of Education and Religion and
the Centre for Greek Language
and is held once a year. It will
be the first time for our
school to participate, hopefully
with great success!
In addition, we are planning
to buy a projector and a
screen. We strongly believe
that the audio-visual aids
could benefit our students
greatly. They would add substantial
help and variety in
our curriculum (language,
history, art, etc) and the celebration
of the national and
school holidays.
We will also try to enrich our
classes with interesting projects,
make the celebration of
our national holidays more
spectacular, inspire our students
and all-in-all be more
successful in teaching our
students our Greek language
and culture.
The art and music programs
will be incorporated in the
curriculum of our classes.
Additionally, we would love
to start a separate music class
for the musically gifted students
every Saturday immediately
after the end of classes
with the intention of creating
a children's choir which
would sing popular Greek
songs.
Once again, we are grateful
for the past, present, and
hopefully future contributions
of the AHEPA Foundation.

Contribute to Pennies & Prayers
A penny is a gift, a prayer of thanks;
a reminder that we meet to further
the work of Christ our Lord.
Pennies & Prayers is a ministry that
funds missions and evangelism, which is
all about bringing Christ to our neighbor.
Your family’s spare change can help
support our current mission parishes
and begin new ones. Keeping a jar
in the home is a way to remind ourselves
of Christ’s call to go to all people everywhere
and make them His disciples.
How to Participate in “Pennies & Prayers”:
1.Take home a “Pennies & Prayers” canister and place
your spare change into the canister from the beginning of
Lent until Pentecost. The whole family is encouraged to
participate.
2. Return the filled canister to church on Pentecost Sunday,
May 23rd. All monies will be counted and all proceeds
will be sent to “Pennies & Prayers” to continue this valuable
work for our Orthodox missions.
Canisters can be picked up after church on Sundays or
from the church office during the week or from any
Philoptohos member. Make this valuable work a family
project!
Acknowledging Our Myrrofores
The Epitaphio Service on Good Friday evening was
highlighted by the presence of the young Myrrofores
or Myrrh-bearing women. These girls were selected
from our Sunday School and Greek School classes to
re-enact the role of the seven original Myrrofores who
went to the tomb of Christ to anoint His body with
myrrh and spices. Our Myrrofores were dressed in all
white and carried white baskets filled with fragrant rose
petals which symbolize the myrrh that was used on the
body of our Lord and Savior. The Myrrofores spread
the petals on the image of Christ which appeared inside
the Epitaphio and also participated in the solemn procession
around the Cathedral. The young ladies who
served as this year’s Myrrofores were: Athena Caiopoulos,
Alexa Gianopoulos, Sophia Kaplanis, Barbara
Lyons, Jane O’Donnell, Anastasia Papadeas, Christina
Pappas, Georgia Pappas, Efthimia Pelonis, Alexia Perdis,
Angelene Perdis, Athina Perdis, Lianna Perdis,
Anna Phelan, Liza Pyle, Katrina Pyle, Athena Skarpelos,
Gabrielle Toczek, Penelope Yokas.
Designer Wreaths
The white designer floral wreaths and matching handdecorated
flower baskets for the Myrrofores on Good
Friday’s Epitaphios Service were offered in loving tribute
to the blessed memory of the Very Reverend
George J. Venetos by George Poullos and Jayne Poullos-Mosqueda.
