1. RESEARCH: Interested in the skilled trades Research and then research some more! A great place to look: www.apprenticesearch.com 2. NARROW YOUR INTERESTS: Investigate businesses that employ the trades that interest you. Ask yourself: are there employment opportunities 3. DEVELOP YOUR RESUME: Try to make your resume trade specifc. Include work and volunteer experiences (include any skills learned through a Specialist High Skills Major if applicable) and hobbies. Ask for permission to use your teacher as a reference. Practice your interview skills. 4. INVESTIGATE: Look into the OYAP (Ontario Youth Apprenticeship Program) through your high school. Investigate and register for a skilled trade co-op placement. 5. ASK SOME QUESTIONS: How will I get to my co-op What hours will I be working How many credits will I receive Will they hire me as an apprentice 6. WORK TOGETHER: Work with your teacher to find an employer that will take you on as a co-op student and that may register you as an apprentice. 7. GET REGISTERED: Through the OYAP program, get registered as an apprentice by your employer and the Ministry of Training Colleges and Universities (MTCU); earn high school credits and obtain your high school diploma. 8. COMPLETE: Complete all required hours (see ‘About Trades’ section of www.apprenticesearch.com for required hours for each trade) and complete all levels of in-school training. 9. PASS: Pass the Ministry exam (passing mark is 70%); receive your Certicate of Qualication. 10. CONGRATULATIONS! You are now a certied tradesperson - Reap the benefits! 12
Learning a trade ONTARIO YOUTH APPRENTICESHIP PROGRAM What is OYAP • A school-work transition program approved and supported by the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities (MTCU). • An opportunity for high school students to start on a pathway leading to a career as a tradesperson • An opportunity to obtain both apprenticeship training leading to qualifications as a skilled tradesperson and high school credits at the same time. • An opportunity for students to be considered full-time students and part-time registered apprentices. • An opportunity for students to learn trade skills and earn required training hours and competencies toward their apprenticeship. How does OYAP work • Interested students are encouraged to take cooperative education where they are placed in an apprenticeable placement. • Students must demonstrate appropriate skills, aptitudes and attitudes while working at the co-op placement so employers feel comfortable sponsoring them as apprentices. • If the employer and student (parent) mutually agree on a partnership, a referral form is forwarded to the Ministry of Training, Colleges & Universities (MTCU). • If all parties are agreeable, a training agreement is signed, confirming the student as an apprentice in the province of Ontario. • By signing the agreement, the trainer agrees to provide components of approved training as outlined in the Provincial Training Standards for the appropriate trade. • The placement will be monitored by the Training Consultant to verify that appropriate training is being provided; and, as with any other co-op placement, the student must also be monitored regularly by the co-op teacher. • After graduation students have the potential to continue the apprenticeship with the same employer or another qualified trainer. What qualifications are required to be part of OYAP • be 16 years of age by the time the co-op placement begins • have successfully completed 16 credits • demonstrate good attendance in school 13 • demonstrate a sincere interest and aptitude for the skilled trade • demonstrate a courteous, positive and responsible attitude • show a strong work ethic. Why choose OYAP as a pathway toward a career as a tradesperson • Access to most trade careers can only be done through an apprenticeship. • To pursue an apprenticeship during high school and not on your own after graduation. • The Co-op provides an opportunity to determine whether an apprenticeship is a suitable option. • To discover whether you have the appropriate aptitude, work habits and discipline to be successful in a trade. • To get an Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) and credits toward an apprenticeship all at the same time. • Challenging and satisfactory work • Hands-on learning • Officially registered as an apprentice in Ontario provides great credentials for resume or portfolio • Are exempt from registration fees • Overall training is completed in a shorter period of time • Potential full-time or part-time employment where training hours continue to accumulate How to get started! • Acquire basic trade skills by taking Technological Education courses in high school. • Research various trades and the apprenticeship process. • Choose Cooperative Education in grade 11 or 12. • Talk to a Guidance/Student Services, Co-operative Education or Technological Education teacher to get more information on application procedures.
