Genetic diseases A genetic disease is a disease caused by abnormalities in an individuals’ genetic material (genome). A simple disease (e.g. cystic fibrosis) is caused by a defect in only one gene. By contract, complex diseases (e.g. most cancers) are caused by many variations occurred in different genes in the same cell. Different variations may lead to the same symptoms.
