Locus Level Relatedness Measures The following measures have been proposed: • Heterozygosity (Het) Straight heterozygosity does uncover strong effects in natural populations of animals and plants, but remains a somewhat crude measure. • d-squared (d 2 ) Microsatellite alleles diverge in a way such that the square of the length difference between a pair of alleles may be linearly related to time since their common ancestor. Consequently, the average squared allele length difference across either loci or individuals provides an estimator for overall genomic similarity.
