Although strictly speak<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>y were our great aunts, we called <strong>the</strong>m<br />

Auntie M<strong>in</strong>na and Auntie Leni. They were ‘taken away’ after<br />

denunciation by a racially ‘blameless’ Aryan, who coveted <strong>the</strong>ir wellsituated<br />

apartment <strong>in</strong> Vienna. It w<strong>as</strong> <strong>as</strong> simple <strong>as</strong> that. I w<strong>as</strong> told<br />

subsequently that <strong>the</strong>y did not suffer long. Too old to work, <strong>the</strong>y were<br />

‘selected’ for <strong>the</strong> g<strong>as</strong> chambers <strong>as</strong> soon <strong>as</strong> <strong>the</strong>y arrived <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> camp.<br />

Ano<strong>the</strong>r note referred to my uncle Felix, Karl Stark’s younger son:<br />

„Dr. Felix Stark, Ried am Riederberg – Physicist at Lorenz,<br />

Berl<strong>in</strong>“.<br />

Much later, Uncle Felix recounted that he and his entire family and<br />

household goods were forced to move from Vienna to Berl<strong>in</strong> so that he<br />

could work on a top secret project related to <strong>the</strong> notorious rocket<br />

propelled V2 bombs. He had to promise formally, never to speak about<br />

it. He w<strong>as</strong> treated extremely well, and not a s<strong>in</strong>gle piece of his valuable<br />

ch<strong>in</strong>a w<strong>as</strong> broken <strong>in</strong> transport, not even when <strong>the</strong>y were all moved<br />

back to Austria before <strong>the</strong> end of <strong>the</strong> war.<br />

Already on <strong>the</strong> 10 th of June 1938 Uncle Felix had written to us <strong>in</strong><br />

Argent<strong>in</strong>a:<br />

„A decision h<strong>as</strong> f<strong>in</strong>ally been made about what is to become of<br />

me. Accord<strong>in</strong>g to a law p<strong>as</strong>sed on 5 th June, I cannot rema<strong>in</strong> at my<br />

post; firstly because I am of mixed race and secondly, because my<br />

wife is of mixed race.“<br />

Until that po<strong>in</strong>t <strong>in</strong> time he had been a grammar school physics<br />

teacher and held a post <strong>in</strong> Vienna’s schools <strong>in</strong>spectorate. He received a<br />

small settlement and, at <strong>the</strong> age of 32, w<strong>as</strong> forced <strong>in</strong>to retirement. He<br />

sought work <strong>in</strong> <strong>in</strong>dustry and eventually tra<strong>in</strong>ed <strong>as</strong> an electrician. By this<br />

route he did eventually f<strong>in</strong>d employment and w<strong>as</strong> subsequently moved<br />

to Berl<strong>in</strong> where, accord<strong>in</strong>g to Karl Stark’s booklet, he worked for<br />

Lorenz. No one <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> company w<strong>as</strong> greatly bo<strong>the</strong>red by his non-Aryan<br />

orig<strong>in</strong>s; after all, he w<strong>as</strong> work<strong>in</strong>g for victory. This is probably where he<br />

w<strong>as</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> spr<strong>in</strong>g of 1943, by which time his bro<strong>the</strong>r Eduard, <strong>the</strong> active<br />

Social Democrat, had become a deta<strong>in</strong>ee <strong>in</strong> a British <strong>in</strong>ternment camp.<br />

I am quite certa<strong>in</strong> that my family, with its conflicts, contradictions and<br />

separations, w<strong>as</strong> not exceptional <strong>in</strong> Vienna. In fact I would even go so<br />
