Germany’s few specialists <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> field of magnetism, and so it w<strong>as</strong> clear<br />

that he w<strong>as</strong> <strong>the</strong> right man for <strong>the</strong> job of develop<strong>in</strong>g a Rheotron. In<br />

May 1943, however, he w<strong>as</strong> still heav<strong>in</strong>g rubble about.<br />

Schmellenmeier found out (or perhaps <strong>in</strong>tended) that o<strong>the</strong>r than<br />

Gans <strong>the</strong>re w<strong>as</strong> only one o<strong>the</strong>r expert <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> field that could be<br />

considered for <strong>the</strong> apparatus’ calculations, and this w<strong>as</strong> Richard<br />

Becker, a Professor at Gött<strong>in</strong>gen University at <strong>the</strong> time. However, <strong>as</strong><br />

Schmellenmeier noted <strong>in</strong> a letter, Becker w<strong>as</strong> unable to take on <strong>the</strong><br />

work due to o<strong>the</strong>r commitments. Becker w<strong>as</strong> a party to <strong>the</strong> Gans<br />

affair, and allegedly his time w<strong>as</strong> fully taken up with ‘projects essential<br />

to <strong>the</strong> war effort’. Klaus Gottste<strong>in</strong> remembers that <strong>in</strong> conversation with<br />

Schmellenmeier it w<strong>as</strong> not Becker but Gerlach who w<strong>as</strong> mentioned <strong>as</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> alternative to Gans. Never<strong>the</strong>less, Gerlach w<strong>as</strong> just <strong>as</strong> busy with<br />

‘t<strong>as</strong>ks essential to <strong>the</strong> war effort’ <strong>as</strong> Becker w<strong>as</strong>, and this <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> end is<br />

what w<strong>as</strong> important.<br />

The development and manufacture of Rheotrons/Betatrons w<strong>as</strong> an<br />

impeccable project from <strong>the</strong> po<strong>in</strong>ts of view of science and economics.<br />

However, <strong>the</strong> authorities <strong>in</strong> charge of this sort of projects were<br />

somewhat preoccupied with o<strong>the</strong>r affaires <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> spr<strong>in</strong>g of 1943. But<br />

Schmellenmeier needed f<strong>in</strong>ancial support for his project. So he made<br />

up a c<strong>as</strong>e and claimed that, “<strong>the</strong> expected radiation could be of<br />

great significance to <strong>the</strong> conduct of <strong>the</strong> war”.<br />

Schmellenmeier drafted an exposé <strong>in</strong> which he argued that, “<strong>the</strong><br />

bundled, highly penetrant radiation could be used to pre-ionise<br />

<strong>the</strong> eng<strong>in</strong>es of aircraft, which would cause <strong>the</strong> ignition to ce<strong>as</strong>e<br />

function<strong>in</strong>g, <strong>the</strong> mach<strong>in</strong>es would be unable to cont<strong>in</strong>ue <strong>the</strong>ir flight<br />

and would <strong>the</strong>refore come <strong>in</strong>to <strong>the</strong> flak area”. This claim w<strong>as</strong> not<br />

new. The British <strong>in</strong>ventor Harry Gr<strong>in</strong>dell-Mat<strong>the</strong>ws, for <strong>in</strong>stance, had<br />

already formulated someth<strong>in</strong>g similar <strong>in</strong> 1934 and had even<br />

demonstrated examples with a somewhat questionable ‘beam’. Nicola<br />

Tesla had also suggested that aircraft could be shot down by stopp<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>the</strong>ir eng<strong>in</strong>e’s ignition. For <strong>the</strong>se k<strong>in</strong>d of effects, a relatively small<br />

amount of radiation w<strong>as</strong> required.<br />
