could be reduced by lengthening the design
period, increasing the size of the design team
(and hence the project cost) or delaying the
implementation of the upgrade to allow a new
product to be used. Similarly, the upgrade
timescale can be shortened by reducing the
scope of the upgrade or by carrying out more
preparation (and hence increasing the design
period, and cost). Alternatively, there may be
value in a number of small upgrades over a
single large upgrade.
The number of upgrades in process at any one
time will depend on the number and type of
target platforms or installations. Where there are
a small number of large units (for instance a
class of say twelve warships) with limited
opportunities for major upgrades (say every 5
years), there are likely to be different plans for
