Some of the most important functions of the
international exchange in Kuwait
15.8.1977. Previously an ARM exchange
with operator handled traffic containing
150 international circuits was, however,
installed in order to meet the increasing
demand in a temporary way. This ARM
exchange was taken into service on
1.10.1976.
The second phase of the contract involves
extension of the ARE 13 exchange
and conversion of the interim
ARM exchange to ARE 13. Thus ARE 13
will be extended to 1400 international
circuits and 120 operator positions. The
installation of this second phase will
take place during 1978.
A modern international maintenance
centre was also included in the contract
and was taken into service in connection
with the first phase of ARE 13.
The telephone network
of Kuwait
Kuwait has a very modern and well developed
telephone network. The local
exchanges are mainly ARF 102, none of
which are older than 10 years. SPC
technology is also now being introduced
in the local network in the form of
ARE 11 and AXE 10. There are also a few
exchanges of non-LM Ericsson systems,
with which ARE 13 is interworking.
Due to the geography of the country, no
4-wire transit exchanges are necessary
on the national level. Accordingly, only
2-wire tandem stages are used for the
national traffic.
The local exchanges are thus connected
to the ARE 13 either direct or via the
tandem stages.
As is shown in fig. 2 the international
ARE 13 exchange connects Kuwait to
the rest of the world via the following
media:
- Satellite connections both via the
Atlantic and the Indian Ocean satellites
with signalling system CCITT No.

- Coaxial cable and radio link connections
to neighbouring countries, with
signalling system CCITT R2.
- A small number of manual connections
with signalling system CCITT
No. 1.
