Race and ethnicity<br />

As can be seen from Figure 6 below, the <strong>SMD</strong><br />

population as defined here is predominantly<br />

white, in line with the working age population<br />

of England as a whole, but this is most strongly<br />

the case in the substance-only group (89%),<br />

and least so with respect to the homeless-only<br />

group (74%). There is the reverse story for<br />

black and mixed race clients of the relevant<br />

oup Composition of <strong>SMD</strong> Categories<br />

agencies: these groups are strongly overrepresented<br />

in the homeless-only category,<br />

and also to some extent in the homelessoffender<br />

and offender-only groups. Asians are<br />

generally underrepresented in all of these <strong>SMD</strong><br />

populations, except homeless-only. Again,<br />

this pattern of ethnicity mix echoes closely<br />

that found in previous research (McNaughton<br />

Nicholls & Quilgars, 2009; Fitzpatrick<br />

et al., 2012).<br />
