Quality of life
As well as the background factors and
experiences in the lives of people who face SMD
discussed above, we were also able to examine
a range of aspects of their current quality of
life, with the MEH survey tending to provide the
most detailed account.
Mental health
nce of mental health problems the substance-offender category (46%), and
In Figure 10 below we provide a composite moderately high for the SMD3 group (41%).
composite picture of the prevalence of four of mental data health sources These findings confirm the perceptions of
problems recorded across the SMD spectrum
derived from four of our core data sources. 18
What this shows is that across these databases
covering potential SMD populations, on average
around 40% of people are identified as having
mental health problems. The proportion
is markedly lower for those who are only
homeless (25%) and rather lower for those who
are in the offender-only or homeless-offending
categories (30%). The highest prevalence is for
those who are in the substance-only category
(58%), with a fairly high incidence among
key informants about the pervasive extent
of mental health problems across the SMD
population, but with a particular association
with substance misuse.
18
The databases varied widely
with respect to the basis
they used for recording
a mental health condition.
