It is obvious that Nigeria is blessed with abundant human resources and there is
high demand by youths for training and development. It is therefore, necessary to
identify skills areas where there are gaps, so that youths with relevant aptitude
and interest can be trained towards meeting these gaps in the sector. The
outcome of this study will facilitate the achievement of the nation’s
developmental objective in manpower training.
The findings will assist educational planners and administrators plan in
collaboration with Employers of Labour in the designing of curriculum that will
meet the skill needs of industry. The findings will also provide necessary evidence
for the need for adequately funding of tertiary institutions to facilitate
procurement and installation of up-to- date equipment, material and tools for
laboratories and workshops.
Human Resource Managers will also find the results helpful in preparing their
training plans and programme. They will have relevant information to support
what they have obviously known all along and may have made suggestions to the
management to no avail.
The heads of the various companies in the sector will also find the results
beneficial. This is because the challenge of skills-Gap will alert them of the need
to train and retrain their staff. The training will assist to narrow existing gaps in
skills, knowledge, attitude and experience of production personnel in the sector.
The Government of the day will be furnished with information on skills-Gap to
facilitate attainment of Vision 20-2020. They will also understand that until issues
of Skills acquisition and utilization is dealt with, the nation’s dream for
technological advancement will remain a mirage.
