Sudan.<br />

[c.1912]. Oblong small folio (230 by 290mm.) Thirty-nine<br />

mounted gelatin silver print photos, images mostly approximately<br />

90 by 110mm., pasted back to back on album leaves throughout,<br />

contemporary cloth, frayed.<br />

An inscription in the front indicates that this may<br />

have been compiled by E. D. Bally, Major, 2nd<br />

Light Infantry.<br />

Most images depicting native people, many posed<br />

portraits of groups of women and some of men,<br />

a few river scenes and background images of<br />

dwellings, largely uncaptioned, though one noting<br />

the tallest girl the photographer had seen, another<br />

of the oldest woman in the tribe, one on the front<br />

pastedown captioned ‘Colours of the “Ninth”, Wau,<br />

Bahr al Ghazal, 1912.<br />
