109. SIDIBE, Malick.
‘Yokoro’.
1968. Silver gelatin print. Signed in manuscript, titled and dated
2007. Dimensions: 500 by 600mm. (19.5 by 23.5 inches).
Malick Sidibé’s photographs are comprised mainly
of studio portraits and photo coverage of life in
Mali. His work on the streets of Bamako signals an
important moment in the evolution of photography
in West Africa in the 1960s and ‘70s. Moving away
from the ingrained, Western image of a devastated
Africa, Sidibé aimed to capture the verve and
frenzy of Malian culture. His studio photography
is quirky, yet glamorous using unusual backdrops
and patterned fabrics which are emblematic of his
studio compositions.
