condition, photographer’s blindstamp.<br />

Dimensions: 178 by 232mm. (9 by 7 inches).<br />

Mohammed bin Hassan Rumaliza (Rumaliza in<br />

Swahili meaning ‘The one who utterly finishes’)<br />

was born around 1850. He was sultan of Ujiji, a city<br />

located on the eastern shore of Lake Tanganyika in<br />

Tanzania and one of the main local slave markets.<br />

Although he was regarded as an Arabic-Swahili,<br />

ethnically he was Arabic. He was very well known<br />

in the 1880s and 1890s for his violent and ruthless<br />

actions in conjunction with the conquest and<br />

exploration of Central African countries, particularly<br />

his involvement in the slave and ivory trades.<br />
