This year´s first cruise ship The cruise that includes Helsingborg is known as the Scandinavian Splendor and, in addition to calling in Helsingborg, the 12-day cruise also features visits to Amsterdam, Kristiansand, Copenhagen, St.Petersburg and Stockholm. The six-star “Crystal Symphony” was the 47th cruise ship to call in Helsingborg since the first-ever cruise ship visit by the “Royal Viking Sun” in 1994. So the city and port have hosted more than 40 000 passengers, who are estimated to have spent upward of SEK 40 million on shopping and excursions. Ahead of schedule The ship’s passengers and her Norwegian master, Captain Glenn Edvardsen, were evidently curious to find out what Helsingborg had to offer. The estimated time of arrival was 0800 hours, but the ship was already tied up at the Grain Quay of the Southern Harbour at 0700. A hearty welcome On her arrival in Helsingborg, the ship was met by bright blue skies and brilliant sunshine, and also by a water-fountain tug, drumcorps with majorettes, flags and flower girls. This way of welcoming cruise ships and their passengers has been highly appreciated and has become a classic for visits to the Port of Helsingborg. Popular excursions During the morning, most of the American guests visited the Kärnan Fort, Sofiero Palace park, the “Ramlösa brunn” site, the Råå fishing village, Kullaberg nature reserve with a stop at the Flickorna Lundgren café, and Krapperups Palace. In the afternoon, many of the passengers went for a shopping spree in the city centre. Faith in the future Cruise ship visits to Northern Europe are not as frequent as they were before the outrage in the USA on September 11. The numbers of cruise ships calling at many ports have dropped dramatically, but the shipping lines and the ports expect to see light at the end of the dark tunnel by next year. For Helsingborg, the situation is already good, but there is hope of even more calls next year. However, it must be borne in mind that growth in the cruise ship market is not automatic and demands many years of hard work. 4
A new crane arrives Early sunday morning September 8, after 42 days at sea, the new container crane arrived in the West Harbour without mishap. The container crane that had been under way from Sicily for 42 days is 58 metres high and weighs 830 tonnes. The barge carrying the crane was towed by the “Sanantonio Primo” tug. Transfer of the crane from the barge to the quay took around one hour, against the expected two hours. Four special trailers were placed under the corners of the crane in preparation for landing it. The crane was then jacked up on the trailers and was rolled ashore. The crane has a lifting capacity of 45 tonnes and will assure our customers of even higher efficiency. Unifeeder celebrates 25 years Unifeeder was founded 25 years ago. It is now obvious that the two owners, Peter Bohnsen and Tonny Paulsen, had then embarked on a very successful venture. Unifeeder is now the biggest feeder operator in the Nordic countries, with an annual turnover approaching 1 million TEUs. Helsingborg was one of the ports of call right from the start, although initially fairly irregularly and with only a few containers to handle. Unifeeder then developed very favourably for Helsingborg, with at least seven calls a week in the port and with an average turnover of about 200 TEUs per ship. In 1997, the Port of Helsingborg awarded Unifeeder its prestigious annual Öresund Prize. The jury justified its award as follows: “The Prize was awarded to Unifeeder in recognition of a well developed and efficient feeder system. This has enabled businesses in the Öresund region to put to rational use the global networks of the trans-oceanic lines. The frequent, fast and reliable Unifeeder service represents a very important transport link between Swedish, Danish and continental ports.” We at the Port of Helsingborg extend our best wishes to Unifeeder for continued positive development in years to come. 5
