1000 fifth-years students visit the Port The Port of Helsingborg issued invitations in mid-May to all fifth-year students in Helsingborg for a study day. This is the seventh year in a row that such a visit has been arranged. “Helsingborg in 2050” was the theme of the homework drawing assignment given to the students. The drawings, together with the answers to ten competition questions, were appraised by a jury, and the youngsters submitting the three winning entries were invited together with their teachers to the prize-giving ceremony onboard the “Aurora af Helsingborg”. The jury justified the winning award as follows: “A fabled world with special visions of the future, in which the elements of air and water have an important significance.” Class 5 PT at Adolfbergs School was the fortunate winning class, whereas class 5-6 Björken, at Maria Park and class 5B at Ättekulla School won second and third places respectively. The companies Scandlines, HH- Ferries, Sundsbussarna, Börje Jönsson Åkeri AB and the Port had set up different stations in the area around the Ocean Harbour. The pupils were first given a guided tour of the Port, and were then free to walk from station to station. Judging by the evaluations, the arrangement was a great success this year too. 8
TransRussia 2002 For the seventh year in succession, the Port of Helsingborg exhibited at the annual TransRussia transport and logistics fair in Moscow. This fair is considered to be the biggest annual fair of its type in Europe. This year’s event attracted around 7000 registered visitors from 32 countries, and 350 exhibitors from 26 countries. For the past few years, the Port of Helsingborg has shared its stand with the Port of Århus. A decade of ”Aurora” During these 10 years, the “Aurora af Helsingborg” has made 158 000 trips without any major incident. The record for the number of passengers per day is around 20 000. During the summer months, holiday-makers travelling to and from Sweden take the best of the trips across the Sound to relax for a while. The Scandlines “Aurora af Helsingborg” ferry has proved to be a major success during her decade of service between Helsingborg and Helsingør. She is an enormous cargo carrier, in spite of the scepticism in the early days concerning her relatively “small” cargo area. Captain Karl Birgander, who was involved from way back when the ship’s keel was laid, is pleased with the high efficiency she has demonstrated during these 10 years. She can be loaded and unloaded on three lanes simultaneously, and her new loading/unloading system is among the most modern in the world. New simulators and computerized exercises enable new crews to become thoroughly familiar with the ship before being ready to manoeuvre her in reality. By continual maintenance and refurbishment, the interior of the ship has been steadily improved, and the safety and enjoyment of passengers and crew have been boosted. Her nautical positioning system has also been improved. “She has been built for a life cycle of at least 25 years. So she still has 15 years left on the Helsingborg - Helsingør run,” concludes Captain Karl Birgander. 9
