FACILITIES Venue: Gold Coast Stadium Location: Carrara, Queensland, Australia Open: 2011 Type: Australian Rules football stadium Use: AFL Gold Coast Capacity: 25,000 Owner and Operator: Gold Coast City Council Architect: Populous Cost: AUD$126 million Venue: Vancouver Olympic/Paralympic Centre Location: Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada Open: 19 February 2009 Type: Curling arena Use: Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympic Games Capacity: 6,000 Owner and Operator: Vancouver Board of Parks and Recreation Architect: Hughes Condon Marler Architects Cost: CAD$87.85 million THE VANCOUVER Olympic/Paralympic Centre will host the curling events for the 2010 Games and will also be a stage for the Cultural Olympiad with the installation of exhibits as part of the Vancouver 2010 Venues Aboriginal Arts Program. Construction of the 10,000 square metre (108,000 square feet) arena began in March 2007 and opened within two years. The Vancouver Organizing Committee for the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games (VANOC) is contributing $40.25 million to the capital budget and the City of Vancouver $47.60 million. In legacy mode, the facility will be converted by 2011 into a multi-use sports and recreation complex featuring an ice pad, curling club with up to eight sheets of curling ice, gymnasium, field house, community centre, pre-school facility, library and offices. An adjacent 6,200 square metre (66,500 square feet) aquatics centre with indoor and outdoor pools will be funded solely by the City and the Board of Parks and Recreation. CARRARA STADIUM is to be rebuilt to host the Australian Football League (AFL) Gold Coast expansion franchise from 2011. The 25,000 capacity venue will include 2,000 hospitality seats and 1,500 standing places, while the oval playing surface will also be able to accommodate an ICCcompliant cricket field; an IAAF standard athletics track, and it will accommodate the requirements of Australia’s bid to host the FIFA World Cup in 2018 or 2022. The undulating wave form of the roof reflects the nearby seascape and landscape, with the stadium being designed to be a contemporary version of “footy in the park”. Food and beverage services will be located in the park rather than inside the stadium, and will be complemented by outdoor picnic and barbecue areas. Hospitality facilities will also attempt to “bring the living room to the park” with openair luxury suites and barbecue terraces that offer views of the field of play and the park. Funding from the federal, state and city governments was confirmed in May 2009, while the AFL will be investing in both the stadium and community projects. Venue: Consol Energy Center Location: Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA Open: 1 August 2010 Type: Ice hockey and multi-use arena Use: NHL Pittsburgh Penguins Capacity: 18,087 Owner: Sports & Exhibition Authority of Pittsburgh and Allegheny County Operator: Pittsburgh Arena Operating and SMG Architect: Populous Cost: USD$321 million THE NHL PITTSBURGH PENGUINS are currently based at the 16,940 capacity Mellon Arena which, having opened in 1961, is now the oldest venue in the league. Ground was broken on the new Consol Energy Centre at the 8 acre downtown construction site in August 2008 and is expected to open just two years later for the start of the 2010/11 season. The facility will have 18,087 seats including 62 luxury suites, four party suites, 2,000 club seats and 236 loge box seats. Although this does not represent a significant increase in seating capacity, the size and quality of accommodation and ancillary services has been enhanced, with the 6 level building offering 720,000 square feet of space compared to 420,000 at the Mellon Arena. It will boast a restaurant, banquet facility, two clubs, five retail locations and two food courts - one of which affords views of the event floor and the other overlooking the downtown Pittsburgh skyline. General admission spectators will be catered for by the provision of one concession point of sale for every 158 spectators, while an enclosed elevated walkway will connect to the adjacent parking garages. The arena has been designed specifically for the NHL, but the 29,470 square foot floor will have the flexibility to be configured to host other sports and entertainment events, including basketball, arena football, indoor soccer, tennis and volleyball. In April 2009, the Penguins and the Sports & Exhibition Authority announced their intention for the facility to be the first NHL arena to attain the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Gold Certification, which is awarded for the design, construction and operation of green buildings. 36 SportBusiness International • No. 152 • 12.09
