Remembrance book
This is why it’s
all worth it...
By Capt. Dave Devenney
12 Wing PAO
Each year our veterans’ numbers
decline, age and illness robbing
the nation of heroes and memories.
The question asked each year is
whether the torch of remembrance
will be passed to the next generation
so that they too may recognize the
service of those who have gone
before. Aletter passed by a young girl
to Master Warrant Officer (MWO)
Dave LeBlanc, of 12 Wing at last
year’s Remembrance Day parade
acknowledges that the torch is firmly
in the hands of the next generation.
After the 2004 Remembrance
Parade, a young girl, who was
accompanied by her mother
approached MWO LeBlanc. The
girl handed an envelope containing
a handwritten letter to him.
“I thanked them and continued
walking from the grounds as I
opened the letter,” said MWO
Leblanc. “After reading the letter
I looked for her but couldn’t see
her anywhere.”
The letter was one of thanks and
appreciation for not only the ones
who have gone before us but for
those who continue to serve today.
The letter contained the line,
“Remember you are a true hero.”
“I was very touched by the letter
and knowing that there are people
that realize and appreciate the sacrifices
that we make for them,
makes me glad I dedicated my life
to the service of my country,” said
MWO LeBlanc.
The girl remains unknown but
her sentiments are strong. Her letter
is evidence that the torch has
been passed and that the next generation
will carry on the traditions
of remembrance.
“Thank you again, we promise we
will never forget.”
Just in time for Remembrance Day,
Military Family Resource Centres
across Canada recently received
copies of a new children’s book.
Titled What We Remember, the
book is a collection of six true stories
that describe Canadian children’s
experiences of war.
As a project to acknowledge the
Year of the Veteran, General Dynamics
Canada bought copies of What
We Remember and donated a copy to
each military family resource centre
in the country.
At the Halifax Military Family
Resource Centre on Friday, November
4, John Cody, General Dynamics’
Atlantic Canada Representative
for the Maritime Helicopter Program,
visited the daycare centre to
present the book.
As HMFRC director Colleen
Calvert and staff members looked
on, Cody sat with the preschoolers
and showed them a copy of the book.
“This has a lot of good stories that
your teachers or parents can read to
you,” he told the children.
Afterward, Cody stated “We have
a lot of creative people in General
Dynamics Canada, and one of them
came across this book.”
According to Cody, General
Dynamics Canada was impressed by
the book and its depiction of war
seen through children’s eyes. “The
stories are written to be very understandable
by kids, and they are very
interesting stories.”
He noted that the book is well suited
to use by libraries and teachers, as
the stories convey messages. “Each
story has teaching points at the end.”
One of the stories concerns the
family of General (retd) John de
Chastelain. De Chastelain’s mother
worked as a spy for the Allies during
the Second World War, Cody
observed. “When some people were
fleeing England and coming to
Canada, John and his sister and his
mother got on a boat and went to
England.” The story concerns the
children’s time in boarding school in
Scotland, while their mother was
away. After the war, the family was
reunited and returned to Canada.
This story is skillfully told in a
way children will appreciate, Cody
believes, “and it’s written in about
three and a half pages so it will hold
kids’ attention.”
Cody stated that the donation is
part of a program General Dynamics
Canada started approximately three
years ago. “We started giving support
to MFRCs, and this is an extension
of it. We are now supporting
every MFRC across the country with
things like this, and some money
which helps them to buy small items
that they don’t have budget for.”
Cody also presented the 12 Wing
Shearwater MFRC with a book on
Tuesday, November 8. Most of the
MFRCs will receive their copies in
the mail.
Lesley Anne Airth is the author
and Mervyn Finch, MBE, provided
the illustrations. The book, a Year of
the Veteran project, is 40 pages long
and historical photos also accompany
each story.
