TRIDENT, NOVEMBER 14, 2005
Energy Awareness Week schedule 2005
is the season. Thermostats are cranked
‘Tand showers are becoming warmer and
longer; everyone’s main concern is to keep
warm. Something that is often overlooked
during the winter is how to survive the cold
while remaining energy efficient. We’ll show
you how.
This year, November 13 to 19 is Energy
Awareness Week. The theme for the events,
Take Charge—You Have The Power To
Save encourages people to take energy saving
into their own hands. It is possible to
save money and energy this winter if a conscious
effort is made.
Some of the events planned include the
Energy Idea draw. If you have any tips on how
to save energy at home, at the office, or on the
road, please fill out the energy idea ballot
online or inserted in the last issue of the Trident
for a chance to win great prizes including
a heather/fan, water-saving shower heads and
programmable thermostats.
Visit any CANEX location within MAR-
LANT during Energy Awareness Week, and
submit an in-store ballot for a chance to win
an energy efficient microwave. This contest is
available to CANEX authorized patrons only.
Another event we have going on during
Energy Awareness Week is the traveling display
booth. Please visit the booth as it travels
0900 to 1500
Tips for energy efficiency: Listed below
are some tips you can follow to reduce cost,
and energy usage this winter.
• Showers save hot water—a typical bath
uses approximately 75 litres of hot water,
while a 5-minute shower with an efficient
showerhead will use about half of that.
• Open south-facing blinds on sunny
winter days.
• Install a low-flow showerhead to reduce
your water consumption by approximately
$80 per year plus the cost of heating your
hot water.
• At the office, turn your thermostat down to
68 degrees or below. Reduce the setting to
55 degrees at the end of the day. (For each
1 degree you turn down the thermostat in
the winter, you’ll save up to five per cent
on your heating costs.)
• If you are planning to buy a new appliance,
consider investing in an Energy Star qualified
model, which is at least 25 per cent
more energy efficient.
Remembrance Day—
A spirit that lives on
Padre’s Corner
By Bruce Murray
Padre
Ihave been thrilled to see in
the past few years that the
support for our veterans has
appeared to grow in leaps and
bounds compared to not that
long ago. Everywhere you go
you can see people wearing
the poppy. I am not sure if is
the result of the added attention
paid to the members of the
Canadian Forces, who are
serving our nation in the various
operations and theatres
around the world, however, it
is my hope and prayer that this
upswell of support for our veterans
is because we are once
again taking the time to intentionally
remember their sacrifices
and that we are truly
proud of them and what they
accomplished.
Yet still there are those out
there who wish to reject the
notion of setting a day aside in
formal remembrance for those
who have served in the two
World Wars, Korea, and the
major conflicts since. For
them, all of what we do is a
glorification of war, devastation,
death, pain and suffering.
And if that were what this day
was about, I would have to
agree, and I would want no
part of it either. War is always
a horrible tragedy, which
points to what would seem to
be our inability to live peaceably
and in unity with one
another. This is a dark reality
of the human condition and
one that we pray we will
somehow overcome. But on
November 11, we come
together not to honour war but
rather to honour spirit.
It is their spirit that we honour,
even above the acts of
bravery and valour. Younger
generations can only imagine
what it was like. I have talked
to many veterans throughout
my career and I have found,
for the most part, that they
really don’t like to speak of
their ordeals. For many, the
images of pain and suffering
and death would be something
that would be best forgotten if
that were possible. But certainly
they will tell you of the
life long friendships that were
made, and the laughter that
helped them endure and persevere.
Some joined out of a
sense of duty, others because
they thought it was very exciting.
Yet reality would set in all
too quickly. There would be
those who would never survive
their first beach landing,
their first voyage across the
Atlantic, their first flying mission.
Mortal danger was an
ever-present reality, and often
they were forced to confront
overwhelming odds. They had
come to fight the good fight
for people they did not even
know. Yet they did not shirk
their responsibilities or their
faith that what they were
doing was for the greater good
of humanity.
It was their spirit that
allowed them face the enemy
and to do what needed to be
done. It would be their spirit
that would allow them to overcome
their own natural fears,
and allowed them to press on
to ultimate victory. It would be
their spirit that would allow
them to face and confront
their own mortality. For so
very many that mortal death
would come all too soon. But
their spirit lived on then, as it
does today. We should never
forget the sacrifice of their
lives, as we too often take
the blessings of freedom and
peace for granted.
Sadly, we live in a world
that in many ways has not
changed all that much. There
are still those in our world who
seek to oppress, control the
basic human rights of others
through overt power and acts
of terror. There is a saying that
I feel speaks so powerfully to
our understanding of such
realities. “When men [people]
sit back and do nothing, evil
flourishes.” Those who we
remember on Remembrance
Day—Our Veterans—understood
this truth. May we who
follow have the same spirit as
they, so that we too may face
the evils of our day, with the
same courage and conviction.
Lest we forget.
