TRIDENT, NOVEMBER 14, 2005
Remembrance concert a tribute to veterans
By Virginia Beaton
Trident staff
It was a night to honour heroes,
both past and present.
During the Till We Meet Again
Remembrance concert, held on
Wednesday, November 2 at the Dalhousie
Arts Centre in Halifax, Second
World War veterans received
accolades from a grateful public.
As soon as the veterans’ formal
entrance into the theatre was
announced, the audience rose in a
standing ovation for the parade of
veterans, led by cadet colour parties.
Later, in a dramatic moment near
the end of the evening, a lone trumpeter
onstage sounded the Last Post
in memory of the fallen, echoed seconds
later by another trumpeter offstage.
The lights dimmed and the
audience stood in respectful silence
to salute the sacrifices of those who
served Canada in war and in peace.
A sold-out house gave a warm
welcome to the performers and the
veterans present for the fourth
annual Till We Meet Again concert,
this year marking the 60th anniversary
of the conclusion of the Second
World War.
“In this Year of the Veteran,
we acknowledge, recognize and
remember the contributions of all
past and present veterans, whether
at Camp Hill, in our communities,
The Novelty Salesmen perform at the concert, backed by the Stadacona Band of Maritime Forces Atlantic.
or around the world,” stated
Andrew Ritcey, recreation therapy
manager, Queen Elizabeth II Health
Science Centre.
“Halifax and Atlantic Canada
have always demonstrated an affection
and a strong affiliation for recognizing
the importance of our
Canadian Forces, past and present.”
In his remarks, Ritcey praised
organizers for their work on this
and all previous Remembrance and
Battle of the Atlantic concerts that
have been fundraisers for the Queen
Elizabeth II Foundation. In particular,
he thanked Joint Task Force
Atlantic (JTFA), the Stadacona
Band of Maritime Forces Atlantic,
and Lieutenant(N) Pat Jessup, concert
coordinator.
Petty Officer Second Class (PO2)
Mitch LeBlanc, a member of the
Stadacona Band, was master of ceremonies
for the evening. He stated
“It is with great pleasure that the
Stadacona Band can help celebrate,
honour and remember those who
gave so much so we may enjoy the
freedoms we share today.” PO2
LeBlanc also noted that the concert
was a memorial to the late Rear
Admiral (RAdm) Desmond (Debby)
Piers, who had died the day before.
The Stadacona Band of Maritime
Forces Atlantic, under the direction
of conductor Lieutenant Commander
(LCdr) Gaetan Bouchard, once
again demonstrated their musical
versatility and excellence. Alternating
musical segments with the guest
performers, the band’s selections
stretched from brisk military marches
such as Standard of St. George,
and on to dance music such as
Beguine for Band, and big band
PTE JODIE CAVICCHI, FORMATION IMAGING SERVICES HALIFAX
tunes from the 1930s and 1940s
including Take the A Train and
Moonlight Serenade.
An informative video display on a
big screen, coordinated by clarinetist
PO2 Clement Roy and including historic
footage of the Canadian Forces
(CF), accompanied the music.
A special guest performer for the
concert was Nova Voce, a men’s
choir directed by conductor Terry
Hurrell. The choir displayed outstanding
tone quality and expression
in a repertoire ranging from
a poignant version of the classic
ballad Lili Marlene, to spirited
renditions of favourite wartime
tunes such as It’s a Long Road to
Tipperary, and All the Nice Girls
Love a Sailor.
The vocal quartet The Novelty
Salesmen was a welcome new addition
to the program lineup. Singing
close harmonies in the style of the
Manhattan Transfer and the Mills
Brothers, and accompanied by musical
director and pianist Paul Simons
and guitarist Paul Hebert, the Novelty
Salesmen gave sophisticated and
smooth performances of nostalgic
tunes such as Sentimental Journey
and Tennessee Waltz.
RAdm Dan McNeil, Commander
Joint Task Force Atlantic and Maritime
Forces Atlantic, spoke briefly
after the intermission.
