26 TRIDENT, NOVEMBER 14, 2005 By Virginia Beaton Trident staff It was a spooky Sunday at the Halifax Military Family Resource Centre (HMFRC). Approximately 200 people attended the Halloween party held from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. on Sunday October 30. “It was an all-ages event,” stated Donna Sutton, youth and family program facilitator at HMFRC. According to Sutton, a team of staff and volunteers spent a lot of time decorating the small multi-purpose room to look like a haunted house. Just for the afternoon, the HMFRC resembled Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, complete with a witches’ kettle, Frankenstein’s laboratory, and jars full of mysterious and scary stuff. Aside from creepy stuff to look at, the HMFRC staff had arranged Halloween crafts and activities for children. “There was a goop station,” stated Sutton. “There was also a scavenger hunt and a pumpkin toss.” Another game was a worm count, “with candy worms,” Sutton explained. Activities included Pin the Wart on the Witch, and families could carve and decorate jack o’lanterns to take home with them. Snacks included trays of fruit and vegetables and crackers and cheese. “Each child left with a treat bag,” noted Sutton. Those who attended were enthusiastic about the good time they’d had, she added. “Some adults were telling me it was the best Halloween party they had ever been to.” Haunted Halloween at Halifax MFRC Decorating pumpkins was just one activity during Halloween celebrations at the HMFRC. HMFRC Helping military families connect with their communities Heather Cudmore-McCarthy is familiar with the needs of today’s military families. As the Halifax Military Family Resource Centre’s (HMFRC) new Outreach Coordinator, it is her job to assist military families in outlying areas. As a military spouse, she has been involved with MFRCs in several communities since 1992 as a volunteer and program participant. “As a military spouse, I know how important it is to feel connected to your community, wherever that community happens to be located. I am familiar with the programs and services that the MFRCs offer. I have used the programs. I know what they can do for people,” she said. “Because I know about the programs and services from a personal standpoint, I feel that I can help families access the programs, and give them an idea of what they can expect.” As Outreach Coordinator, she is responsible for assisting military families living in central Nova Scotia and Cape Breton, as well as the Halifax Regional Municipality (HRM) by promoting the HMFRC throughout the communities. Occasionally, special activities are planned for the various communities served by the Outreach program. Cudmore-McCarthy said she passionate about helping military families. “I want to have people feel connected within their communities, and connected to the HMFRC and its services.” One way that military families outside of HRM can build connections within their area is by using the Halifax Military Community Connections Fund. The fund provides small grants for groups of military families or units to organize activities that will benefit the community. Events include barbecues, holiday parties, and other community events. The Focus on Us Outreach newsletter is a quarterly publication that is distributed to military families served by the program. Cudmore-McCarthy said the information includes community resource information, activities and community events.
