Good Medicine
In this technological age, it seems as if there are new medical
advances coming out virtually every day. Surgical procedures are
becoming more sophisticated and advances are being made in
combating autoimmune disease like multiple sclerosis. Doctors
are working hard to find a cure for Alzheimer’s disease and, of
course, the battle against cancer continues.
Just a few decades ago, it was nearly impossible to imagine
the transplantation of human organs. Today, it is possible to replace
the inner ear, the cornea, glands, blood vessels, muscles, nerves,
bone marrow, blood, liver, kidney, lungs and heart, among other
organs. Artificial joints can be constructed to repair the hips or other
joints of people and animals who are aging or have had accidents.
Every day we learn more about nutrition and the importance
of eating the proper foods, not to mention the value of supplements
and vitamins. Holistic health care has grown into a multi-million
dollar business and weight management and exercise have moved
to the forefront of our conciousness.
In this edition of the Parklander, we invite you to take a
look at some medical and health issues, from newborn care to the
utilization of robotics in surgery to caring for the elderly and the
value of hospice care.
Our medical section begins on Page 16.
CLARIFICATION
A caption on the People Watching page in December’s edition
was inaccurate. In the photo of football player Nicholas Marill and
his sister, Marissa, the caption should say that Mom Joanna and
Step-mom Dawn are proud of Nick.
