By Angela Carlton Cinderella Finds Her Carriage At The Dealership One fine day my husband turned to me with the golden words: “Let’s go to the car dealership.” Since my old four-door Honda was almost ready for the junkyard, this quickly got my interest. I raced for good sneakers and braced myself for car shopping. Normally, shopping’s great, but for cars it’s grueling. You either get one or don’t. There’s no substituting the designer jeans for a cotton T-shirt. Truthfully, I was just happy to look at anything with a sunroof. Lord, how I wanted that sunroof. Who could blame me; we’re 10 minutes from Deerfield Beach. Our sales manager, Marvin, was burly suave and wasted no time leading us to the used car lot, which was sort of like getting the popcorn bag the previous moviegoer left behind on the sticky floor. Nothing sang to us. There wasn’t one sunroof. “How about this new one” my husband said, pointing to the white car with a spoiler (what are those for anyway) purring from afar. “Works for me!” During my test drive, it’s a gorgeous non-hurricane day so I waste zero time opening the sunroof. I have never owned a new car in my life! I was busy admiring the interior, trying not to act like a dizzy teenager behind the wheel of her first car. For all I know, Marvin and my hubby could have been talking about Miss October. I was concentrating on the fact that the seats were satin. Nothing could upset me in my toy store moment. I’ll spare you all the details of the wheeling and dealing with burly Marvin, but it did take me a whole soda and a pack of crackers to get through. My husband’s “tight” with money so Marvin literally ran for his. He kept cracking a wise-guy grin, placing a finger over his lips saying, “You guys are killing me!” Then he flew off to the glass room where all those men huddle and speak. Seriously, we all know they’re discussing the Miami Dolphins’ losing record, but it’s part of the slick salesman-sock-it-to-him routine. Weary, my husband and I decided to break from our own huddle and come up with a strategy. Only there was nothing to say. I was the dizzy teenager with her eye on the prize. “Should we buy…” “YES!!!!” I squealed. Everybody needs that drive-the-new-car-off-the-lot experience. Mine was almost fairy tale perfect. The sun was setting, a big Florida orange in the sky. But wait, what’s this My husband was pressing buttons and shuffling papers and talking about the logistics of the car. “Zip it honey,” I said, my voice not too far from a whine. “Can I just have my new car moment” He glared at me then chuckled and shook his head from side to side. At last, I was able to E-A-S-E the sunroof back and position my seat. Then I was off, pseudo Cinderella dashing away to something grand in my pearly white carriage. The end.
