By Lou Musmeci Talking Turkey At SOS Village As the result of a joint project by the Parklander and Whole Foods Market during the holidays, children in six homes at SOS Village enjoyed a traditional Thanksgiving dinner. “We were really excited when the Parklander called and asked us to participate in this project,” said Ann Gaines, marketing director at Whole Foods Market of Coral Springs. “We love to give back to the community.” Of course, a traditional dinner would not be complete without dessert, and that’s where Cold Stone Creamery came to the rescue, providing ice cream for the festive occasion. “Doing business is being a good citizen,” said Ruth Spiegel, owner of Cold Stone Creamery locations in Coral Springs, Miami Lakes, Pompano Beach, Lighthouse Point and Deerfield Beach. “We are actively involved in a number of worthy causes within our communities.” Ruth Spiegel of Cold Stone Creamery, Sue DePetrillo of the Parklander, Ann Gaines of Whole Foods Market and Peggy Coico of SOS Village. There's an artistic touch to SOS Village. Marjory Bruszer, executive director of SOS Village in Coconut Creek, said the organization’s mission is to provide stability and a traditional family setting for foster care children in the village. Bruszer said that the entire day was well received by the children at the village. “It was excellent,” Bruszer said. “We were very appreciative.” There are currently 56 children living in the six houses at SOS Village. Bruszer said that the organization is able to “maintain children as long as they need.” Although there have been many success stories from children in the village, Bruszer fondly remembers one in particular. “One child spent six years here with her two sisters and is now in her second year at the University of South Florida and is doing exceptionally well,” Bruszer said. “She comes to SOS to visit.” Bruszer said the young lady’s success will positively influence her siblings, who are still at the village. “Both intend to follow in her footsteps,” Bruszer said. “Future career plans for these kids are positive if they have the chance to stay in the same location and do not need to move from school, to school, to school.
