MBTA Silver Line Bus Rapid
Transit – Phase III
Boston, Massachusetts
The MBTA Silver Line is an FTA New Starts Bus Rapid
Transit (BRT) system that connects Boston’s southwestern
neighborhoods to downtown Boston, Logan International
Airport, and the rest of the MBTA rapid transit system.
Phase III of this system developed a 1.7-mile underground
tunnel through the historic downtown core between South
Station and New England Medical Center, including three
stations. This complex project incorporated the MBTA’s
most sophisticated ITS and communications technologies
for vehicle tracking and operations signaling, passenger
information, fare collection, life safety systems, and security.
Metrolinx CAD / AVL deployment
Toronto, Ontario
Metrolinx operates buses and trains as a regional transit
service throughout the Greater Golden Horseshoe area
of southern Ontario; an area serving over 7 million people
over 10,000 square kilometers. IBI group worked with
Metrolinx to complete a needs assessment and technology
review, the result of which was a planned CAD/AVL system
that also incorporating Automatic Vehicle Location, Mobile
Data Terminals, Automatic Passenger Counters, Automatic
Stop Announcements (audio and visual), and Traveler
Information functionality.
IBI Group is currently involved in the procurement,
including the development of technical
specifications and assistance with procurement
and implementation management.
IBI Group had primary responsibility for operations planning,
ITS planning and design, and communications system design.
Network simulation modeling was used to determine the
operational benefits and life-cycle costs of physical alignment
alternatives. The design of ITS components was based on
an assessment of needs and a system architecture that was
compliant with national ITS standards. The communications
system utilized the most advanced technologies and an
integrated, redundant fiber optic network to transmit voice,
data, and video using IP standards.
