98 B-Line Rapid Bus and Real
Time Information System
Greater Vancouver Transportation
Authority (TransLink), Vancouver, BC
IBI Group was the prime consultant for design of the 98
B-Line Bus Rapid Transit service in Vancouver. Technology
components of the 98 B-Line BRT include a CAD/AVL
system, wireless data communications, transit signal priority,
and stop-based passenger information signs that display
“Next Bus Arrival Time” based on headways and schedules.
IBI Group was also responsible for system evaluation,
including the design for the collection and evaluation of
“before” and “after” data, as well as developing guidelines
for region-wide transit signal priority implementation.
Brampton SmartBus and Farebox
Procurement
Brampton, Ontario
IBI Group was retained by Brampton Transit, Hamilton
Street Railway Company (HSR) and Burlington Transit, with
a combined fleet of over 500 vehicles, to provide consulting
services for the joint procurement and evaluation of a new
fare collection system for their respective transit fleets. The
goal was to conduct a single procurement process based
on a common standard for all three municipalities, and with
the view to integrate to the GTA Farecard System (“Presto”)
presently being rolled out. Project tasks included:
Market review, including interviews with various North
American transit agencies where the major vendors have
recently deployed farebox systems;
Needs analysis, developed through user needs workshops
with all stakeholder groups at each transit agency;
Technical specifications for a full electronic fare collection
system, including on-board, garage, vault and central
equipment;
Detailed evaluation framework and fairness commissioner
services for the evaluation of vendor proposals.
IBI Group developed a business case for SmartBus in
Brampton as well as an implementation strategy for the
project. An operational review to determine user needs
was an important element. This was followed by technical
specifications as part of a RFP package used for soliciting
proposals from vendors.
IBI’s contract was extended to support the agency in
the evaluation of proposals and selection of a preferred
vendor. IBI Group is now providing support services for
the implementation of the ACS system, including review
of vendor design and document submittals, support of
internal agency management activities, and participation in
all stages of testing.
