GLOBAL CHALLENGE #3: FOOD FOR THE HEART MAKING A GOOD OIL BETTER Monsanto is in the final stages of developing the first wave of soybeans that will be naturally lower in linolenic acid, which in turn, would help reduce trans-fats in many foods and even eliminate trans-fats in some. This soybean oil, which is currently being tested both in the field and laboratory, should be available in limited quantities in time to meet the federal government’s 2006 labeling guidelines for trans-fats in food products. Monsanto also is applying conventional breeding techniques to produce a soybean higher in oleic acid. This soybean, which also would be low in linolenic acid, would produce soy oil high in levels of healthy monounsaturated fat. Finally, Monsanto is building upon these improvements to design, using biotechnology, soybeans that will produce oil high in heart-healthy monounsaturated fats, low in linolenic acid and low in saturated fat — the first natural oil that could make the claim of being saturated-fat free. “Monsanto researchers are looking at ways to enhance soybeans so that they are healthier and, in turn, can reduce risks that lead to cardiovascular disease,” said David Stark, Monsanto’s lead of Global Industry Partnerships. Stark made the announcement at the American Dietetic Association’s 2003 Annual Meeting in San Antonio. “It is our hope that these enhanced soybeans will provide economic and environmental benefits for growers, and healthier agricultural solutions for consumers who are concerned about their intake of unhealthy fats.” Monsanto is also researching other quality improvement traits focused on delivering benefits to consumers. For example, the company has produced, using biotechnology, soy and canola crops that can deliver a vegetable oil enriched with omega-3 fatty acids. Omega-3 fatty acids, typically found in fish oil, have been shown to play a part in lowering elevated blood triglyceride levels, stabilizing irregular heart beat (arrhythmia) and reducing blood pressure. These omega-3 products are in early research phases and could be commercialized around 2011. “Given the early stage of development of this research, we are working closely with academics, food companies, consumer advocates and other stakeholders to carefully develop our strategy for potential future products,” Stark said. INDUSTRY PARTNERSHIPS TEST HEALTHIER SOYBEANS Monsanto’s research on quality enhancements to soy oil is consistent with the objective of the Better Bean Initiative (BBI), a program created by the United Soybean Board (USB) to enhance soybean oil and meal composition (www.talksoy.com). A test crop of compositionally enhanced soybeans was recently processed into oil and shipped to food manufacturers for performance evaluation. “Continuous feedback from consumers is a key element of the BBI, and USB appreciates the strong interest our industry partners have shown in participating in the testing,” said Dan Latham, former chairman of the USB and a soybean farmer from Alexander, Iowa. 17 The BBI also targets the feed industry, which desires higher soy protein animal feed with traits that include increased amino acid levels and improved digestibility to enhance overall efficiency and decrease environmental impacts. { MONSANTO COMPANY 2004 PLEDGE REPORT: PAGES 16-17 }
